Saying goodbye to a rabbit or guinea pig in Lodi

Lodi, New Jersey

How Lodi families say goodbye to small pets

Lodi is a compact Bergen County borough cut through by the Saddle River and bordered by busy Route 17 and Route 46, with Interstate 80 close by. Housing mixes small single-family homes, two-families and garden apartment complexes, often with shared parking lots. When you call for a pickup, say which building or unit, where the van can stop, and whether there are steps to the door.

The Saddle River winds through the middle of town, with parkland along stretches of its banks, and many residents know its paths well. Riverside parks are public land, so check before scattering ashes there. In a borough with small yards and many rentals, families often prefer a keepsake indoors or a planter they can take with them if they move.

Collection from around Lodi can be expensive or simply unavailable, because the nearest crematorium may be an hour away. The upside of a small pet is that you can take them yourself. Wrap them in a towel, place them in a sturdy box, keep the car cool and call ahead so someone expects you. Many families find that drive becomes a quiet last hour together.

Lodi is home to about 26,187 people, the 38th-largest of the 58 New Jersey communities we cover. Newark, roughly 11 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Lodi run from there.

If you want to compare providers, look at Garfield (1 miles), Hackensack (2 miles) and Elmwood Park (3 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

56.5%[1]

The NFDA projected New Jersey's cremation rate at 56.5% for 2024.

6 million[2]

About 6 million US households keep small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.

4.3 years[3]

Pet rabbits in England have a median age at death of 4.3 years.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

We built the this numbers from Embrace Pet Insurance and O'Neill et al. 2020, Veterinary Record, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Cremation habits in New Jersey and your small pet

About 56.5%[1] of people in New Jersey are cremated, a share that has been rising for years. Small-pet aftercare has moved in the same direction, only more slowly, because a rabbit or guinea pig is so easy to bury at home. Expect to meet both habits among friends and neighbors. There's no right answer, only what suits your garden, your plans to stay or move and how your pet died.

Heat, cold and timing in Lodi

Mild weather makes garden burial practical most of the year in Lodi, which is why many local families choose it for a rabbit or guinea pig. The ground is usually diggable, and planting something over the grave, a lavender or a small shrub, is easy. The main job is depth: dig well below where foxes and dogs will bother, and set a flat stone on top.

Lodi's climate is gentle compared with many places, which gives you some breathing room after a small pet dies. A rabbit or guinea pig wrapped in a towel in a cool room will be fine for several hours, and overnight in a sealed bag in a box somewhere cold. There's time to let a bonded partner say goodbye and for children to see their pet before any decisions are made.

Small pet cremation prices for Lodi

The euthanasia is often a separate bill from the cremation, and families in Lodi are sometimes surprised by it. There's no national figure for rabbits, but CareCredit's 2025 study puts cat euthanasia at $158 in a clinic and $359 at home[5], the closest published benchmark for a small pet. Exotics vets may charge a little more for sedation, so ask for both figures together.

What New Jersey allows for small pets

If your pet was put to sleep, the drug used stays in the body. Since 2003, US labels for euthanasia drugs have carried a warning that euthanized animals must be disposed of so that scavenging wildlife can't eat them[7]. That's why vets in New Jersey and elsewhere often suggest cremation after euthanasia, or a well-protected grave with a heavy slab over it.

To find your county or city office in New Jersey, start with the official New Jersey local government directory.

The rules that apply across New Jersey (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our New Jersey page. Lodi may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.

The first day, step by step

  1. Ask to see your pet if they died at a Lodi clinic while you weren't there, for instance under anaesthetic for a dental procedure. Most practices will make a quiet room ready.
  2. Ask what happened in straightforward language, and whether anything might have changed the outcome. That's reasonable to want to know, and a caring vet will answer with kindness.
  3. Decide whether to take your pet home, so you can bury them or say goodbye there, or whether the clinic should arrange the cremation instead.
  4. Take the bonded partner's needs into account. Where the remaining pet hasn't seen the body, it may be worth a short trip home before the cremation.
  5. Confirm the aftercare in writing before you leave, including private or communal and the expected date for the ashes.
  6. Ask for the bill to be itemized, with the cremation listed on its own line rather than folded into the treatment.

Remembering your small pet in Lodi

July in Lodi tops out around 85F, and garden apartments without central air can get warm quickly. Put your pet on a cool bathroom or kitchen floor, cover them with a light sheet, and surround them with cold packs or bags of ice sealed in plastic. January and February bring freezing nights, when a cold enclosed porch can serve for a few hours.

Questions people ask

Will I have to travel to Newark to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Newark (roughly 11 miles from Lodi) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Why does the Lodi page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 56.5%[1] of New Jersey residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Does the Lodi climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 85°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January and February, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.

Which nearby towns can I compare with Lodi?

The closest communities we cover are Garfield (about 1 miles), Hackensack (about 2 miles) and Elmwood Park (about 3 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Lodi too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Can I scatter my rabbit's ashes in a Lodi park?

Public parks usually have their own rules, and some ask you to get permission first. With only a few tablespoons of ash, many families find burying a small tin or scattering in a private garden easier and more meaningful. If you do scatter somewhere public, choose a quiet spot away from paths and water, on a still day.

My rabbit was only four. Is that young?

Sadly, not unusually. UK vet records put the median age at death at 4.3 years[3] for pet rabbits and 4.03 years[8] for guinea pigs, even though well-kept individuals can reach eight or more. Dental disease and flystrike claim many rabbits early. If your pet died younger than you hoped, it's rarely because you did something wrong.
