Westfield, New Jersey
Caring for a small pet's body in Westfield
Westfield summers bring July highs near 87F, humid enough that your companion's body needs cooling without delay: a basement or air-conditioned room, a blanket underneath, frozen gel packs alongside. From December through February, overnight freezes are normal and a garage stays cold enough for a short wait. Providers serving Union County usually include Westfield within their standard area without extra charges for distance.
Westfield is a Union County town of tree-lined streets, colonial and Victorian houses and a lively downtown near its Raritan Valley Line station. Most homes have a driveway and a backyard, and many households have lived in the same house through several generations of pets. That makes the logistics of a pickup easy; the harder part is usually deciding what you want, and there's time to do that.
Home burial is the most common goodbye for small pets in towns like Westfield, and with a little care it works well. Choose a spot away from wells, ditches and the vegetable patch, and dig deeper than feels necessary. A paving slab or a heavy planter set on top stops foxes, coyotes and farm dogs from reaching a small body, and gives you a place to put flowers.
About 32,595 people live in Westfield, which makes it the 28th-largest of the 58 New Jersey communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Westfield are based about 11 miles away in Newark, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Westfield sits within easy reach of Roselle (4 miles), Summit (4 miles) and Rahway (5 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Westfield; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

Local funeral customs and a very small pet
Cremation covers about 56.5%[1] of human funerals in New Jersey, which puts it in the middle of the range. Local vets here are used to families who take a small pet home for burial, so if that's your plan, just tell the practice. Ask for a lined box or a pet body bag, and check whether a euthanasia fee includes aftercare you won't be using, so it can be taken off.
The New Jersey figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Cool, covered and safe: Westfield weather notes
Outdoor hutches are the thing to watch in a cold Westfield winter. Rabbits cope with cold better than heat, but wet, drafty hutches and old age are a hard combination, and guinea pigs feel the cold far more. If a pet dies outdoors in January, bring the body inside to a cool room, make sure the bonded partner is warm and eating, and think about moving the survivor indoors for a while.
Snow and ice can delay a crematorium's collection round, especially from outlying roads around Westfield. For a small pet that's less of a worry than for a dog: a sealed bag in a lidded box in an unheated garage or porch keeps them well for several days in this kind of cold. Just keep the box out of reach of cats, dogs, mice and anything else that finds its way into outbuildings.

How much Westfield families usually pay
Why doesn't a two-pound rabbit cost a tenth of what a large dog does? Because much of the price is handling, paperwork and returning the ashes, not fuel. By our estimate, private cremation costs about $9 per pound for a 15 lb pet but nearer $4 per pound at 100 lb[5], so the smallest pets pay the most per pound. For Westfield families, the practical lesson is to compare total prices, not weight bands.

What New Jersey allows for small pets
Rules in New Jersey treat a rabbit or ferret like any other pet, which in practice means burial on land you own is usually fine and cremation is always allowed. The extra care small pets need is practical rather than legal: bury deep enough to stop foxes and dogs digging, keep away from vegetable beds, and never put a pet that was euthanized in a shallow grave.

The first day, step by step
- Check the whole group right away. When a chinchilla or guinea pig dies unexpectedly, the rest of the herd need a careful look for anything that seems off.
- Remove the body promptly once the others have had a little while with it; you don't want them huddled next to it all day.
- Note the date, age and any symptoms in a notebook. Over the years, a record helps your vet spot patterns in a group.
- Decide aftercare animal by animal. Some keepers choose private cremation for certain pets and communal for others.
- Label every box clearly if more than one animal goes to a crematorium serving Westfield at once.
- Rebalance the group: add more hides, and watch for fresh scuffles or one animal left on its own while the herd settles.
Small keepsakes for a small life
Mindowaskin Park's pond near the center of town, Echo Lake Park on the Mountainside line and the wooded Watchung Reservation just to the west are all places Westfield residents know well. Because they're public land, scattering on them requires the agreement of the town or county. Plenty of households choose a young tree or flowering shrub for their own yard instead, which gives everyone somewhere to pause each spring.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Newark to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Newark (roughly 11 miles from Westfield) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Westfield?
Usually yes. Roselle is about 4 miles away, Summit is about 4 miles away and Rahway is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Does the Westfield climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 87°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
How do New Jersey attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the New Jersey human cremation rate at about 56.5%[1]. We show it on the Westfield page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Do chinchillas need anything different at the end?
Chinchillas are sensitive to heat, stress and handling, so a calm, cool room matters. A vet experienced with chinchillas may suggest sedation before euthanasia. Afterwards, because a chinchilla usually weighs well under a kilo, a private cremation returns only a tablespoon or two of ash. Their dense fur makes a lovely keepsake clipping if it's taken before cremation.
Can I drop my rabbit off at the crematorium myself?
Usually, yes, and for a small pet it's often the simplest option. Call ahead so they expect you, bring your pet wrapped in a towel in a sturdy box, and keep the car cool. Dropping off yourself often avoids a collection fee and lets you see where your pet will be cared for. Some crematoria near Westfield will even let you wait.
