Burnet, Texas
How Burnet families say goodbye to small pets
Hill Country summers around Burnet are long and hot, often with afternoons near 100 degrees, and winters bring clear, cold nights with occasional freezes. When a pet dies in summer, bring them inside onto a blanket, well away from windows, and call a clinic or collection service that morning. A winter loss allows a bit more time, though a cold garage is not a long-term holding place.
Inks Lake, Lake Buchanan and the rocky trails around Longhorn Cavern are close to Burnet, and many local families spend weekends outdoors. Scattering in a state park or on the lakes is governed by park and water authority rules, so read those first. Many owners keep the ashes on a mantel and return to a favorite overlook as a place of memory.
Collection from around Burnet can be expensive or simply unavailable, because the nearest crematorium may be an hour away. The upside of a small pet is that you can take them yourself. Wrap them in a towel, place them in a sturdy box, keep the car cool and call ahead so someone expects you. Many families find that drive becomes a quiet last hour together.
About 6,939 people live in Burnet, which makes it the 226th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. Austin, roughly 45 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Burnet run from there.
Our pages for Marble Falls (13 miles), Horseshoe Bay (17 miles) and Leander (26 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Burnet as well.

Why the Texas cremation rate matters here
About 55.7%[1] of people in Texas are cremated, a share that has been rising for years. Small-pet aftercare has moved in the same direction, only more slowly, because a rabbit or guinea pig is so easy to bury at home. Expect to meet both habits among friends and neighbors. There's no right answer, only what suits your garden, your plans to stay or move and how your pet died.
For the Texas figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Burnet rather than as pet data.
Cool, covered and safe: Burnet weather notes
However you're travelling in or around Burnet, a small pet's body travels best lying flat in a lidded box, wedged so it can't slide. Put the box on the floor of the car or strap it in with a seatbelt, keep the car at a comfortable temperature and take the most direct route. If you're walking or using transit, a sturdy shopping bag around the box keeps things discreet.

Where the money goes: small pet aftercare in Burnet
With a small pet, you're paying mostly for careful handling rather than chamber time. A median 2 kg rabbit returns about 74 g[5] of ash and a guinea pig about 37 g[6], by our estimate, so the urn can be tiny and inexpensive. In Burnet, the biggest swing in price usually comes from collection: dropping your pet off yourself is often free, while a home visit can cost as much as the cremation.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Texas: Texas costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What the rules in Texas mean for a rabbit or ferret
Burying a small pet on land you don't own is where most families run into trouble. Shared gardens, allotments, community gardens, parks and a relative's yard all need the owner's permission, and many public spaces in Texas don't allow burial at all. If there's any doubt, cremate and keep the ashes, then bury them later somewhere that's genuinely yours, or somewhere the owner has happily agreed.

Start with the Texas rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Burnet's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
The first day, step by step
- Put on gloves before you handle a rabbit that died suddenly or bled from the nose or mouth. RHDV2 spreads on hands, clothes and bedding.
- Place your rabbit in a sealed bag inside a lidded box, and keep the other rabbits away from the body and the hutch.
- Phone your vet before burying or disposing of anything. US federal guidance says to speak with a vet or an animal health official before you act.
- Bag the hay, bedding and litter, then set the bags aside somewhere separate until the vet has told you how to get rid of them.
- Scrub the enclosure, dishes and water bottle with a disinfectant your vet recommends, then let everything dry fully.
- Ask about testing and vaccination for the rabbits that remain. Until you have answers, cremating the body is generally the safer option.
Keeping a small companion close
Burnet is the seat of Burnet County, set among the granite and limestone hills of the Highland Lakes, about 45 miles northwest of Austin along US 281. The town has a historic square, older homes on quiet streets and plenty of properties on a few acres outside town. Pickup may come from Austin, Marble Falls or farther, so ask up front what the drive costs and how quickly someone can be there.

Questions people ask
Why does the Burnet page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 55.7%[1] of Texas residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Where are the providers that serve Burnet actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Austin, about 45 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Burnet and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Burnet?
The closest communities we cover are Marble Falls (about 13 miles), Horseshoe Bay (about 17 miles) and Leander (about 26 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Burnet too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Can a ferret be cremated with its hammock or toys?
Often, but ask first. Natural fabrics and paper usually go in; plastic, metal buckles, bells and synthetic fleece may need to be removed. Many families put in a sock the ferret stole or a short note, and keep the harness and hammock at home. If something has to come out, ask the provider to return it with the ashes.
Do chinchillas need anything different at the end?
Chinchillas are sensitive to heat, stress and handling, so a calm, cool room matters. A vet experienced with chinchillas may suggest sedation before euthanasia. Afterwards, because a chinchilla usually weighs well under a kilo, a private cremation returns only a tablespoon or two of ash. Their dense fur makes a lovely keepsake clipping if it's taken before cremation.
My rabbit was only four. Is that young?
Sadly, not unusually. UK vet records put the median age at death at 4.3 years[3] for pet rabbits and 4.03 years[8] for guinea pigs, even though well-kept individuals can reach eight or more. Dental disease and flystrike claim many rabbits early. If your pet died younger than you hoped, it's rarely because you did something wrong.
