El Paso, Texas
What small pet aftercare in El Paso looks like
Much of El Paso sits on caliche, a cement-hard layer of desert soil that makes digging a backyard grave slow and sometimes impossible without tools. That is one reason many families here choose cremation even when they have a yard. Military families at Fort Bliss, who may be reassigned within a year or two, also tend to prefer ashes they can take with them to the next post.
El Paso's Environmental Services department handles deceased animals under separate categories for household pets and farm animals, with different rules for homes inside city limits and those elsewhere in El Paso County, and any fee lands on your water utility bill. That service is disposal, though. If you want your pet cremated individually and the ashes returned, you'll need to arrange it through your vet or a private provider.
In a city the size of El Paso, the hard part usually isn't finding a crematorium. It's finding one that handles very small animals with real care. Large metros have several pet crematoria, and at least one or two will see rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets every week. Ask how they keep a two-pound body separate in a chamber built for dogs: a dedicated tray, a smaller unit or a run on its own. Providers who do this often will answer without hesitating.
El Paso's population is around 683,012, the 6th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover.
Our pages for Sunland Park (8 miles), Socorro (16 miles) and Horizon City (18 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers El Paso as well.
55.7%[1]
The NFDA projected Texas's cremation rate at 55.7% for 2024.
6 million[2]
About 6 million US households keep small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.
4.3 years[3]
Pet rabbits in England have a median age at death of 4.3 years.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
If a number here surprises you, the primary material is O'Neill et al. 2020, Veterinary Record and Embrace Pet Insurance; we only apply it to this.

Local funeral customs and a very small pet
Cremation covers about 55.7%[1] of human funerals in Texas, which puts it in the middle of the range. Local vets here are used to families who take a small pet home for burial, so if that's your plan, just tell the practice. Ask for a lined box or a pet body bag, and check whether a euthanasia fee includes aftercare you won't be using, so it can be taken off.
The Texas figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Seasons and small-pet aftercare in El Paso
If a long weekend or holiday means no crematorium in El Paso can take your pet for several days during May, June, July, August and September, a freezer is the kindest place for a small body. Seal your pet in a freezer bag, set it in a small box and freeze it. Tell the crematorium when you drop your pet off; there's no need to defrost first, and it makes no difference to a private cremation.
Heat matters for garden burial too. Sun-baked ground in El Paso can be hard to dig deeply in June, and a shallow grave is exactly what foxes, coyotes and dogs find. If the soil is like concrete, soak it the evening before, or choose cremation and bury the ashes later when the weather cools. Ashes come to no harm on a shelf in the meantime.

What rabbit and guinea pig cremation costs in El Paso
Rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets and chinchillas sit in the lightest band on nearly every US price list. CareCredit lists pets up to 30 lb at $45 to $75 for communal cremation and $100 to $175 for private[5], and small mammals tend to fall at the lower end. El Paso prices will land somewhere around there, higher if you add home collection, an after-hours visit or a carved wooden urn.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Texas: Texas costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Burial and scattering rules in Texas
For small mammals, the rules worth knowing in Texas cover three things: burying on your own property, scattering ashes, and what to do if a rabbit may have died of a disease such as RHDV2. The first two are straightforward. The third is a good reason to call your vet before a garden burial whenever a rabbit dies without warning.
City of El Paso Environmental Services publishes El Paso's official guidance. Note that it deals with public collection, not with booking a private cremation. Not sure which office covers El Paso? The Texas local government directory is the official list.
The rules that apply across Texas (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Texas page. El Paso may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
A calm plan for the next 24 hours
- Ask your pet sitter to call you first, and not to touch anything until they have, should your pet die while you're out of El Paso.
- Talk them through the basics by phone: a towel around the body, a lid on the box, and the coldest room they can find.
- Ask your vet to hold your pet in their cold room until you're home. Most will do this for a few days without fuss.
- Make sure the survivor is being watched for eating and droppings, and give the sitter your vet's number.
- Decide on aftercare when you're back and can think clearly. This isn't a choice you have to make from a hotel.
- Say goodbye at the clinic if that would help, ahead of the burial or cremation taking place.
Remembering your small pet in El Paso
El Paso's dry desert heat peaks early, with June often the hottest month and afternoons near 100 degrees, while the summer monsoon can bring sudden storms and flooded streets. In that heat, move your pet's body into air conditioning immediately and pack it with frozen bottles or gel packs in a towel. Winter nights dip near freezing, but daytime sun through a window can still warm a room quickly.

Questions people ask
How does El Paso's weather affect small pet aftercare?
June is the hottest month in El Paso, with average highs around 97°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.
Is cremation common in Texas?
For people, yes: about 55.7%[1] of Texas deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in El Paso follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from El Paso?
Usually yes. Sunland Park is about 8 miles away, Socorro is about 16 miles away and Horizon City is about 18 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is there a vet in El Paso who really knows rabbits and guinea pigs?
Most cities this size have at least one practice with exotics experience, but ask the right question: whether the vet regularly treats rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets or chinchillas, not just whether they'll see them. For end-of-life care, experience matters. Sedating a small, frightened animal calmly takes practice, and an experienced vet will also know which crematorium handles small pets well.
Should my other rabbit see the body?
Many keepers find it helps. Letting the survivor sniff, groom or lie beside the body for a while often seems to reduce searching and restlessness afterwards. Give them 30 minutes to an hour somewhere quiet. Then watch closely: a grieving rabbit that stops eating or passing droppings can develop gut stasis within a day, which needs a vet quickly.
What should I carry my small pet's body in?
A shoebox, small carrier or sturdy cardboard box works well. Line it with a towel and some of your pet's bedding or hay, and close the lid. In warm weather, put your pet in a sealed bag first. Label the box with your name and your pet's name. A plastic trash bag on its own upsets most people, and a lined box is gentler for everyone.
