San Marcos, Texas
Finding the right help for a small pet in San Marcos
Students at Texas State often adopt pets during college, and those animals may be with them through graduation, first jobs and moves. When a pet dies during the school year, a student may be far from family and managing aftercare alone for the first time. Call someone you trust first. Then ask any provider whether your pet would be cremated alone or with other animals, since only the first option returns your own pet's ashes.
San Marcos is a college town and the Hays County seat, halfway between Austin and San Antonio on Interstate 35. Texas State University shapes daily life, and much of the housing near campus is rentals and apartments where burial is not an option. Out in the newer subdivisions spreading along Interstate 35 and toward the east, families mostly choose cremation too. Services from both nearby metros reach San Marcos; check what collection costs.
Families around San Marcos with land often ask whether they can bury a rabbit or guinea pig in a paddock, orchard or woodland. Usually yes on your own property, but stay well clear of water, and think about whether you'll keep the land. If a move is possible, private cremation and a small urn mean your pet comes with you, and you can still bury the ashes in a new garden later.
San Marcos's population is around 77,830, the 52nd-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. Austin, roughly 29 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover San Marcos run from there.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Kyle (8 miles), Buda (15 miles) and Lockhart (16 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Why the Texas cremation rate matters here
In Texas, about 55.7%[1] of people are cremated. Pet crematoria are established around most larger towns, and they take rabbits, ferrets and chinchillas as a matter of routine. If you're torn between a garden grave and cremation, one simple test helps: will you still live here in five years, and does it matter to you that your pet comes along if you don't?
That Texas rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for San Marcos only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Keeping a small body cool in San Marcos's climate
If a long weekend or holiday means no crematorium in San Marcos can take your pet for several days during May, June, July, August and September, a freezer is the kindest place for a small body. Seal your pet in a freezer bag, set it in a small box and freeze it. Tell the crematorium when you drop your pet off; there's no need to defrost first, and it makes no difference to a private cremation.
Heat matters for garden burial too. Sun-baked ground in San Marcos can be hard to dig deeply in August, and a shallow grave is exactly what foxes, coyotes and dogs find. If the soil is like concrete, soak it the evening before, or choose cremation and bury the ashes later when the weather cools. Ashes come to no harm on a shelf in the meantime.

Small pet cremation prices for San Marcos
Pet insurance rarely helps with a small pet's aftercare. Standard policies typically don't cover cremation at all[5], and many rabbit and guinea pig owners have no policy. A few US insurers sell end-of-life add-ons; Figo's paid up to $250 toward cremation and burial[6]. If your ferret or rabbit is insured, check the small print before you book, then budget as if nothing will be reimbursed.

What Texas allows for small pets
If your pet was put to sleep, the drug used stays in the body. Since 2003, US labels for euthanasia drugs have carried a warning that euthanized animals must be disposed of so that scavenging wildlife can't eat them[8]. That's why vets in Texas and elsewhere often suggest cremation after euthanasia, or a well-protected grave with a heavy slab over it.
To find your county or city office in Texas, start with the official Texas local government directory.
The Texas page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. San Marcos's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
Your first few hours, in order
- Tell the children simply and honestly. Say their pet died; gone to sleep sounds gentler but can leave a small child scared.
- Let them see and stroke their pet if they want to, wrapped in a favorite blanket or fleece.
- Give them a job: lining the box, drawing something, or picking a toy or handful of hay to send along with their pet.
- Keep your pet cool in a lidded box in the coldest room you have until you've all agreed what to do.
- Choose a goodbye the children can take part in, whether a garden burial or a small ceremony when the ashes come home from a San Marcos provider.
- Keep an eye on the bonded survivor too, and let the children help check that they're eating.
Marking the loss of a rabbit, guinea pig or ferret
August in San Marcos averages about 97°F, and the humidity rises after summer storms. A pet who dies in the heat needs to be moved into the coolest room indoors quickly and laid on a towel. Cold is rarely the issue; January nights average around 39°F. This part of Texas is prone to flash floods, and the Blanco and San Marcos rivers have risen dangerously fast more than once.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Austin to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Austin (roughly 29 miles from San Marcos) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from San Marcos?
Usually yes. Kyle is about 8 miles away, Buda is about 15 miles away and Lockhart is about 16 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in Texas?
For people, yes: about 55.7%[1] of Texas deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in San Marcos follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Does the San Marcos climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 97°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Can I drop my rabbit off at the crematorium myself?
Usually, yes, and for a small pet it's often the simplest option. Call ahead so they expect you, bring your pet wrapped in a towel in a sturdy box, and keep the car cool. Dropping off yourself often avoids a collection fee and lets you see where your pet will be cared for. Some crematoria near San Marcos will even let you wait.
Should my other rabbit see the body?
Many keepers find it helps. Letting the survivor sniff, groom or lie beside the body for a while often seems to reduce searching and restlessness afterwards. Give them 30 minutes to an hour somewhere quiet. Then watch closely: a grieving rabbit that stops eating or passing droppings can develop gut stasis within a day, which needs a vet quickly.
