Saying goodbye to a rabbit or guinea pig in Herriman

Herriman, Utah

Rabbit and guinea pig cremation around Herriman

Wildfire is a real concern on Herriman's hillsides; the 2010 Machine Gun Fire forced evacuations here. A pet evacuation kit is a good place to keep a list of vets and aftercare contacts, along with carriers and medications. If a pet dies while your family is displaced, a vet near where you are staying can usually keep the body cold and arrange cremation until you are home.

Herriman was a quiet farming settlement for generations and is now a city of more than 60,000, with new neighborhoods stretching up into the Oquirrh foothills. Many households are young families who arrived in the last decade, often with a cat, rabbit or hamster alongside the kids. Find a vet you like before you need one, and ask which aftercare options the clinic offers.

Ashes for small pets from Herriman can take a little longer to return, because the crematorium may collect from country vets only once or twice a week. That's normal. If a date matters, perhaps a birthday or a school holiday so the children can be there when the ashes come home, mention it when you book and ask whether you can collect them in person.

Herriman's population is around 63,282, the 14th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Herriman are based about 20 miles away in Salt Lake City, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.

Herriman sits within easy reach of Riverton (3 miles), Bluffdale (4 miles) and South Jordan (5 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Herriman; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

46.1%[1]

The NFDA projected Utah's cremation rate at 46.1% for 2024.

6 million[2]

About 6 million US households keep small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.

4.3 years[3]

Pet rabbits in England have a median age at death of 4.3 years.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

We built the this numbers from American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 National Pet Owners Survey release and O'Neill et al. 2020, Veterinary Record, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

A small pet at home in Herriman

Local funeral customs and a very small pet

Burial is the local habit in Utah, where about 46.1%[1] of people are cremated, and some areas have pet cemeteries as well as gardens. A cemetery gives a small pet a permanent, tended grave, but it costs more than cremation: across five published US price lists, a small pet's grave, plot and opening fees together came to a median of about $350[5], by our estimate. Ask for the full cost, including opening the grave.

For the Utah figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Herriman rather than as pet data.

Timing a small pet's aftercare around Herriman's seasons

Herriman swings from summer highs near 94°F in July to freezing lows in January, February and December. For small mammals the summer end is the more dangerous one: rabbits and chinchillas overheat easily, and a death in a heatwave means getting the body somewhere cool quickly. In winter you have more time, but frozen soil can put off a garden burial until spring.

It helps to keep a small aftercare kit ready all year in a climate like Herriman's: a sturdy lidded box, an old towel, a few sealable bags and a cool box with ice packs. In July and August you'll need the cool box within an hour or two. In January, February and December the garage or a porch does the same job. Having the kit ready saves a frantic search for a box on a hard day.

Pricing a private cremation for a pocket pet in Herriman

If you'd rather bury than cremate but don't have a yard, a pet cemetery is the other route. One pet insurer's published US prices for a plot for pets under 30 lb start at about $400 to $600[6], several times the cost of a private cremation. For most Herriman small-pet owners, the realistic choice is between a garden grave, which costs almost nothing, a communal cremation and a private one.

What the rules in Utah mean for a rabbit or ferret

Cremation needs no permit anywhere in Utah; the rules that matter for small pets are about burial. A rabbit or guinea pig is easy to bury at home, so it's worth knowing the local limits first: whether you need to own the land, how far to stay from water, and whether a pet that was put to sleep needs a deeper grave.

To find your county or city office in Utah, start with the official Utah local government directory.

The rules that apply across Utah (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Utah page. Herriman may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.

The first day, step by step

  1. Put on gloves before touching a rabbit that died without warning or had blood around the mouth or nose. Hands, clothing and bedding can all carry RHDV2.
  2. Place your rabbit in a sealed bag, then a box with a lid, and make sure the other rabbits stay well clear of both body and hutch.
  3. Phone your vet before burying or disposing of anything. US federal guidance says to speak with a vet or an animal health official before you act.
  4. Bag the hay, bedding and litter, then set the bags aside somewhere separate until the vet has told you how to get rid of them.
  5. Scrub the enclosure, dishes and water bottle with a disinfectant your vet recommends, then let everything dry fully.
  6. Ask about testing and vaccination for the rabbits that remain. Until you have answers, cremating the body is generally the safer option.

Marking the loss of a rabbit, guinea pig or ferret

West-side summers in Herriman climb into the mid-90s and the foothills brown out quickly. A pet's body should be moved somewhere cool within hours; a basement or a shaded utility room works well. Winter lows around 24 degrees help outdoors, but a heated house still speeds things up, so plan collection within a day, and tell the driver if your street is steep or unplowed.

Questions people ask

How do Utah attitudes to cremation compare?

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Utah human cremation rate at about 46.1%[1]. We show it on the Herriman page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Where are the providers that serve Herriman actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Salt Lake City, about 20 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Herriman and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Herriman?

Usually yes. Riverton is about 3 miles away, Bluffdale is about 4 miles away and South Jordan is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Does the Herriman climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 94°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.

Where do people near Herriman find an exotic vet?

In smaller towns, many families travel to a larger centre such as Salt Lake City for rabbit, chinchilla or ferret care. Your local vet can still help at the end: euthanasia of a small pet is routine for any vet, and they can send your pet to a regional crematorium. If you have a choice, ask whether they'll sedate first, which is kinder for small, nervous animals.

What should I carry my small pet's body in?

A shoebox, small carrier or sturdy cardboard box works well. Line it with a towel and some of your pet's bedding or hay, and close the lid. In warm weather, put your pet in a sealed bag first. Label the box with your name and your pet's name. A plastic trash bag on its own upsets most people, and a lined box is gentler for everyone.
