Portsmouth, Virginia
Finding the right help for a small pet in Portsmouth
Portsmouth sits on the western bank of the Elizabeth River, facing downtown Norfolk across the water, and many of its neighborhoods are older rowhouses, cottages and brick homes on small lots. With limited yard space in the older blocks, most owners of a cat, rabbit or cockatoo pick cremation. Your vet can explain which Hampton Roads providers collect in Portsmouth and whether a tunnel crossing adds to the fee.
Portsmouth rarely freezes: January lows hover around 34F, and July highs near 89F arrive wrapped in heavy humidity. That warmth means a deceased companion should be kept as cool as you can manage and passed to a provider that same day. During hurricane season, flooded underpasses and power cuts can delay everyone, so store a provider's number in your contacts well before any storm is on the map.
Rabbits and cavies are popular youth livestock projects around towns like Portsmouth, and a child who shows animals may lose one mid-season. Treat it as a real loss even if the animal was kept partly for showing. Many families bury a show rabbit at home, others choose private cremation so the child can keep a small tin. Either way, let the child decide how involved they want to be.
Portsmouth's population is around 96,777, the 11th-largest of the 32 Virginia communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Norfolk, about 7 miles (12 km) away, which is where some providers serving Portsmouth are based.
If you want to compare providers, look at Norfolk (8 miles, a larger centre), Chesapeake (13 miles, a larger centre) and Hampton (13 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
55.6%[1]
The NFDA projected Virginia's cremation rate at 55.6% for 2024.
6 million[2]
About 6 million US households keep small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.
4.3 years[3]
Pet rabbits in England have a median age at death of 4.3 years.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
The published sources behind those figures are Embrace Pet Insurance and O'Neill et al. 2020, Veterinary Record.

How Virginia thinks about cremation
With cremation at about 55.6%[1] for people in Virginia, a lot of families keep ashes at home, and small-pet ashes fit naturally into that. A guinea pig's container is small enough for a bookshelf or a child's bedside table. If you'd like a matching set later, perhaps for two bonded rabbits, choose a simple design now that you'll be able to find again in a few years.
That Virginia rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Portsmouth only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Seasons and small-pet aftercare in Portsmouth
A summer power cut or a failed air conditioner in Portsmouth is a real danger for small mammals, and it's also when some families lose one. Keep a cool box and a few ice packs in the freezer through June, July and August. If a pet dies, the same kit keeps the body safe until a vet or crematorium opens, and meanwhile the frozen packs, wrapped in a towel, give the survivors something cool to lie against.
If a long weekend or holiday means no crematorium in Portsmouth can take your pet for several days during June, July and August, a freezer is the kindest place for a small body. Seal your pet in a freezer bag, set it in a small box and freeze it. Tell the crematorium when you drop your pet off; there's no need to defrost first, and it makes no difference to a private cremation.

Small pet cremation prices for Portsmouth
The euthanasia is often a separate bill from the cremation, and families in Portsmouth are sometimes surprised by it. There's no national figure for rabbits, but CareCredit's 2025 study puts cat euthanasia at $158 in a clinic and $359 at home[5], the closest published benchmark for a small pet. Exotics vets may charge a little more for sedation, so ask for both figures together.

What Virginia allows for small pets
Pet cremation is lightly regulated almost everywhere. A UK trade body has described it as an unregulated market[7], and one directory counts only a handful of US states with laws aimed specifically at pet crematories[8]. Whatever applies in Virginia, your best protection with a small pet is a written note from the provider saying whether the cremation is individual, partitioned or communal, and when the ashes will be returned.
To find your county or city office in Virginia, start with the official Virginia local government directory.
The Virginia page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Portsmouth's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
What to do when your rabbit or guinea pig dies in Portsmouth
- Check gently and take a moment. Small pets often die quietly overnight. If you're unsure, look for breathing and a heartbeat; your vet can confirm by phone or in person.
- Let the bonded partner say goodbye. Put the survivor with the body for 30 minutes to an hour somewhere calm, then separate them.
- Wrap your pet in a towel or fleece and place them in a shoebox or carrier. Keep the box somewhere cool; in warm weather, use a sealed bag and the fridge.
- Take a keepsake now if you'd like one: a clipping of fur or a clay print of a foot. It can't be done after cremation.
- Call your vet if the death was sudden. With a rabbit in particular, they'll want to talk you through RHDV2 before the hutch is cleaned or anything goes into the ground.
- Choose burial or cremation. For cremation, get a provider serving Portsmouth to confirm in writing that it's private.
- Watch the survivor for the next few days: eating, drinking and droppings.
Keepsakes and memorials for small pets
The Olde Towne waterfront, the seawall and the little paddlewheel ferry to Norfolk shape ordinary days for many residents. Later, some families want a spoonful of ashes to go into the Elizabeth River, while others place the urn on a sill overlooking the harbor. City parks and the federal land around the shipyard have firm restrictions, so ask before scattering anything.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Portsmouth actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Norfolk, about 7 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Portsmouth and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Portsmouth?
The closest communities we cover are Norfolk (about 8 miles), Chesapeake (about 13 miles) and Hampton (about 13 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Portsmouth too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Why does the Portsmouth page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 55.6%[1] of Virginia residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Does the Portsmouth climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 89°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
My pet was put to sleep. Can I still bury them at home?
You can in most places, but the grave needs to be deep. The drug used for euthanasia stays in the body and can poison foxes, dogs, cats or birds of prey that dig it up. Dig well down, lay a paving slab on top, and keep away from ponds and streams. If that isn't practical, cremation is the safer choice.
Will a crematorium collect from a rural address near Portsmouth?
Some will, often for a mileage fee, and others only collect from vets on set days. For a rabbit or guinea pig, driving your pet in yourself is usually easier and cheaper. If you can't drive, your vet can often keep your pet in their cold room until the next crematorium collection, usually within a few days.
