Howard, Wisconsin
How Howard families say goodbye to small pets
Northeast Wisconsin winters settle in by Thanksgiving and hang on until March, and January nights here average around 11F. That cold works in your favor when a pet dies late in the evening: swaddle the body in a comforter and leave it in the garage, and it will be fine until clinics open. With July afternoons near 81F and muggy air, summer calls for getting your companion to a provider the same afternoon.
Howard is a fast-growing village on Green Bay's northwest side, strung along the US 41 corridor between the city, Suamico and Hobart. Much of it is newer subdivision housing, with older farmhouses and bigger lots hanging on at the edges. Green Bay animal hospitals, including ones open late, are only minutes down the highway, so help is reachable at nearly any hour even though Howard itself is mostly residential.
A rural practice serving Howard may keep a pet in its freezer until the crematorium's next collection, which is perfectly normal and doesn't affect the cremation. If you'd rather your pet wasn't frozen, say so and ask whether you can drive them to the crematorium yourself. For a rabbit or guinea pig that's a simple trip, and it often shortens the wait for the ashes.
Howard's population is around 22,233, the 38th-largest of the 50 Wisconsin communities we cover.
Our pages for Green Bay (5 miles, a larger centre), De Pere (10 miles) and Kaukauna (22 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Howard as well.

Local funeral customs and a very small pet
Pet crematoria tend to be plentiful in Wisconsin, where roughly 70.7%[1] of people are cremated, and that usually means shorter waits. Some will cremate a rabbit or guinea pig within a day or two of drop-off and let you collect the ashes that same week. If timing matters to you, perhaps because a child is leaving for camp or a relative is visiting, ask for an expected return date before you choose.
The Wisconsin figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Heat, cold and timing in Howard
Many families in cold places cremate in winter and bury the ashes in spring. For a rabbit, that often means a small tin kept on a shelf until the ground softens, then a planting under the lilac or beside where the run used to stand. It keeps the garden ritual without asking anyone to hack at frozen soil in January, when average lows sit around 11°F.
Outdoor hutches are the thing to watch in a cold Howard winter. Rabbits cope with cold better than heat, but wet, drafty hutches and old age are a hard combination, and guinea pigs feel the cold far more. If a pet dies outdoors in January, bring the body inside to a cool room, make sure the bonded partner is warm and eating, and think about moving the survivor indoors for a while.

Budgeting for a small pet's aftercare in Howard
Rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets and chinchillas sit in the lightest band on nearly every US price list. CareCredit lists pets up to 30 lb at $45 to $75 for communal cremation and $100 to $175 for private[5], and small mammals tend to fall at the lower end. Howard prices will land somewhere around there, higher if you add home collection, an after-hours visit or a carved wooden urn.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Wisconsin: Wisconsin costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Local rules worth knowing in Wisconsin
Small-pet burial rules tend to be lighter than those for larger animals. England's groundwater guidance, for example, sets no minimum requirements for small pets buried on your own land; its stricter limits are for larger animals. Rules in Wisconsin may differ, so check locally, but for a rabbit or guinea pig the real questions are usually ownership of the land and keeping scavengers out.

Your first few hours, in order
- Ask to see your pet if the death happened at a Howard clinic in your absence, perhaps during a dental under anaesthetic. Most practices are able to find you a quiet room.
- Ask what happened in straightforward language, and whether anything might have changed the outcome. That's reasonable to want to know, and a caring vet will answer with kindness.
- Decide whether to take your pet home, so you can bury them or say goodbye there, or whether the clinic should arrange the cremation instead.
- Take the bonded partner's needs into account. If the survivor didn't see the body, consider bringing your pet home briefly first.
- Confirm the aftercare in writing before you leave, including private or communal and the expected date for the ashes.
- Ask for the bill to be itemized, so the treatment and the aftercare appear as separate lines.
Keeping a small companion close
Duck Creek winds through Howard, and the Mountain Bay Trail begins here before heading west across the state on an old rail bed, so plenty of residents connect those places with their animals. Scattering, though, mostly takes place in a flower border along the back fence, or families simply keep an urn near the fireplace. Village and Brown County parks each have regulations on this, so get an answer from the parks office first.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Howard?
Usually yes. Green Bay is about 5 miles away, De Pere is about 10 miles away and Kaukauna is about 22 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Does the Howard climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 81°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Why does the Howard page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 70.7%[1] of Wisconsin residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will a crematorium collect from a rural address near Howard?
Some will, often for a mileage fee, and others only collect from vets on set days. For a rabbit or guinea pig, driving your pet in yourself is usually easier and cheaper. If you can't drive, your vet can often keep your pet in their cold room until the next crematorium collection, usually within a few days.
Is private cremation worth it for a guinea pig?
It is if you want the ashes back to keep, scatter or bury later, particularly if you might move house. If a garden grave or communal cremation feels right, there's no need to pay more. A guinea pig's size doesn't make either choice less meaningful; what matters is what you'll be glad of a year from now.
What should I carry my small pet's body in?
A shoebox, small carrier or sturdy cardboard box works well. Line it with a towel and some of your pet's bedding or hay, and close the lid. In warm weather, put your pet in a sealed bag first. Label the box with your name and your pet's name. A plastic trash bag on its own upsets most people, and a lined box is gentler for everyone.
