Small Pet Cremation in Belgium: what to know
Small-pet aftercare in Belgium comes down to the same three choices as anywhere: a garden burial, a communal cremation or a private cremation with ashes returned. What differs is how vets and crematoria are organized, what they charge for a pet under a few kilos and which rules apply to burial. This page covers Belgium as a whole; each city adds local detail.
In Belgium, the price of cremating a small pet is modest, but it pays to know exactly what you're buying. Words like individual, private, partitioned and communal aren't used consistently from one provider to the next. Ask for the service in writing, check whether collection and a container are included, and ask how a pet weighing under a kilo is kept apart from larger animals.

Cremation habits in Belgium and your small pet
In Belgium, about 67.98%[1] of people are cremated. Pet crematoria are established around most larger towns, and they take rabbits, ferrets and chinchillas as a matter of routine. If you're torn between a garden grave and cremation, one simple test helps: will you still live here in five years, and does it matter to you that your pet comes along if you don't?
We take the Belgium percentage from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.
Small pet cremation prices for Belgium
Few European crematoria publish a price just for rabbits, but many have a lowest weight band that covers them. An Irish crematorium lists individual cremation from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg[2], and a German consumer guide lists collective cremation at EUR 85 to 205 and individual at EUR 165 to 375 across pet sizes[3]. Ask a provider near Belgium for the price for a pet under 3 kg.
Scandinavian providers show how extras add up. A Norwegian crematorium lists separate cremation from NOK 3,790 and communal from NOK 1,190 for pets of 1 to 20 kg[4], and charges NOK 1,790 more for same-day return of ashes[5]. In Sweden, ashes normally take two to four weeks[6]. Near Belgium, ask whether speed costs extra before you pay for it.
| Country | Collective (communal) | Individual (ashes returned) |
|---|---|---|
| Ireland (under 2 kg) | Not listed | From EUR 150 |
| Germany (all sizes) | EUR 85 to 205 | EUR 165 to 375 |
| Norway (1 to 20 kg) | From NOK 1,190 | NOK 3,790 |

What Belgium allows for small pets
Small-pet burial rules tend to be lighter than those for larger animals. England's groundwater guidance, for example, sets no minimum requirements for small pets buried on your own land; its stricter limits are for larger animals. Rules in Belgium may differ, so check locally, but for a rabbit or guinea pig the real questions are usually ownership of the land and keeping scavengers out.
Step by step in Belgium
- Tell the children simply and honestly. Say their pet died; gone to sleep sounds gentler but can leave a small child scared.
- Let them see and stroke their pet if they'd like, with the body tucked into a fleece or well-loved blanket.
- Give them a job: lining the box, drawing something, or picking a toy or handful of hay to send along with their pet.
- Keep your pet cool in a lidded box in the coldest room you have until you've all agreed what to do.
- Choose a goodbye the children can take part in, whether a garden burial or a small ceremony when the ashes come home from a Belgium provider.
- Keep an eye on the bonded survivor too, and let the children help check that they're eating.
Remembering your small pet in Belgium
A median-weight rabbit leaves about 74 g[7] of ash and a guinea pig about 37 g[8], by our estimate. That's enough to share: a pinch in a pendant for each child, some buried in the garden in Belgium and the rest in a keepsake urn. The urn size calculator helps you choose containers that won't look half empty.
If Belgium is not quite where you are, all locations has the rest. Otherwise the services page, the tools and the poll results are the useful next stops.

Questions people ask
Should I worry about rabbit viruses in Belgium?
Rabbit hemorrhagic disease is present in wild rabbits across much of Belgium, and vaccination is standard advice for pet rabbits. If a pet rabbit dies suddenly, keep other rabbits away from its bedding and speak to your vet before burial, so they can advise on testing and on cleaning the hutch.
How dangerous is summer heat for rabbits in Belgium?
More than most owners expect. Rabbits and chinchillas overheat far more easily than dogs or cats, and heatstroke is a common cause of sudden summer deaths. In the warmest parts of Belgium, such as Belgium where summer highs average about °F, keep small pets in the coolest room during hot spells, and if one dies, keep the body chilled until collection.
Do winters in Belgium affect burying a small pet?
In the colder parts of Belgium, frozen ground can make a safe-depth grave impossible for weeks or months. Many families keep a small pet in a sealed box somewhere cold for a few days, or cremate and bury the ashes in spring. In Belgium, among the coldest places we cover, average winter lows reach about °F.
Do I need to tell anyone if my rabbit died of a disease?
Usually not for common illnesses, but your vet may want to know about suspected rabbit hemorrhagic disease so they can warn other owners locally. Ask them before you bury or dispose of the body. Disinfect the hutch, bowls and bottles, and throw away the hay and bedding the rabbit used.
Can bonded pairs be cremated together in Belgium?
Yes, most providers will carry out a joint cremation if you ask, so the ashes of two rabbits or guinea pigs are combined in one urn. If one partner dies first, you can keep those ashes and ask later for them to be combined. Put the request in writing, as the default is to keep pets separate.
How much does small pet cremation cost in Belgium?
Small mammals sit in the lightest price band almost everywhere, so they're among the least expensive pets to cremate in Belgium. Individual cremation returns ashes and costs noticeably more than communal. Ask for a written total in local currency that includes collection, the cremation and the container, and compare two providers if you can.
