Ghent, Flanders
What families in Ghent usually arrange
Many Flemish row houses in Ghent have a long, narrow city garden at the back, and some families bury a small pet there where rules allow, while many more choose cremation and an urn indoors. Belgian vets commonly arrange cremation on your behalf. Ask them plainly whether it will be individual, so the ashes are your pet's alone, what the total cost is, and when you can collect the urn.
Ghent is a compact city of canals, narrow streets and tall townhouses, and since the 2017 circulation plan, cars can no longer drive straight through the center, so many residents get around by bicycle and tram. If your pet dies at home, getting your animal to a vet may need planning, especially from an upstairs flat in the old town. Mention your street, the stairs and whether you have a car when you ask for options.
Ferret owners in Ghent often carry a particular tiredness at the end. Many ferrets die of adrenal disease or insulinoma after months of treatment, and the family is worn out by the time the decision comes. Aftercare needn't add to that. Your vet can arrange cremation straight after the euthanasia, and you can take a keepsake, such as a clay print of a front paw, while you're still in the room.
Ghent is home to about 262,000 people, the 2nd-largest of the 2 Flanders communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Ghent are based about 32 miles away in Antwerp, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Brussels (31 miles, a larger centre) and Antwerp (32 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Burial or cremation: the local habit
With about 67.98%[1] of people in Belgium cremated, cremation is the majority choice but not an overwhelming one. That leaves room for local habits. In rented homes and apartments, private cremation is the practical route for a rabbit or ferret. In family homes with a yard, a garden grave is still common. Many families choose cremation specifically after a euthanasia, because the drug in the body can harm scavengers.
The Belgium percentage above is from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Ghent, not as a count of pets.
Seasons and small-pet aftercare in Ghent
Whatever the weather in Ghent, the rule for a small pet is the same: keep the body cool, covered and out of the sun. A rabbit or guinea pig cools and stiffens faster than a dog, so wrap them gently soon after death while they're still easy to position, then place them in a box lined with their bedding. In warm weather, a sealed bag inside the box and a spot in the fridge or a cooler keeps them peaceful for a day or two. In cold weather, an unheated garage does the same job.

What rabbit and guinea pig cremation costs in Ghent
Scandinavian providers show how extras add up. A Norwegian crematorium lists separate cremation from NOK 3,790 and communal from NOK 1,190 for pets of 1 to 20 kg[5], and charges NOK 1,790 more for same-day return of ashes[6]. In Sweden, ashes normally take two to four weeks[7]. Near Ghent, ask whether speed costs extra before you pay for it.

What Flanders allows for small pets
Pet cremation is lightly regulated almost everywhere. A UK trade body has described it as an unregulated market[9], and one directory counts only a handful of US states with laws aimed specifically at pet crematories[10]. Whatever applies in Flanders, your best protection with a small pet is a written note from the provider saying whether the cremation is individual, partitioned or communal, and when the ashes will be returned.
A calm plan for the next 24 hours
- Ask your pet sitter to call you first, and not to touch anything until they have, should your pet die while you're out of Ghent.
- Talk them through the basics by phone: a towel around your pet, a closed box and the coolest room in the house.
- Ask your vet to hold your pet in cold storage until you get back. A few days is no trouble for most practices.
- Make sure the survivor is being watched for eating and droppings, and give the sitter your vet's number.
- Decide on aftercare when you're back and able to think. There's no need to choose from a hotel room.
- Say goodbye at the clinic if that would help, ahead of the burial or cremation taking place.
Ways Ghent families remember rabbits and guinea pigs
Ghent's climate is mild, grey and damp off the North Sea, with few hard frosts and summers that can bring muggy spells, especially during the crowded Gentse Feesten week in July. Because the city rarely gets properly cold, don't count on winter to buy much time. Put your pet on a folded blanket in the coolest room, keep wrapped cold packs close to the body, and arrange collection or a vet visit within the day.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Ghent actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Antwerp, about 32 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Ghent and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Why does the Ghent page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 67.98%[1] of Belgium residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Ghent?
The closest communities we cover are Brussels (about 31 miles) and Antwerp (about 32 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Ghent too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
What should I carry my small pet's body in?
A shoebox, small carrier or sturdy cardboard box works well. Line it with a towel and some of your pet's bedding or hay, and close the lid. In warm weather, put your pet in a sealed bag first. Label the box with your name and your pet's name. A plastic trash bag on its own upsets most people, and a lined box is gentler for everyone.
Do chinchillas need anything different at the end?
Chinchillas are sensitive to heat, stress and handling, so a calm, cool room matters. A vet experienced with chinchillas may suggest sedation before euthanasia. Afterwards, because a chinchilla usually weighs well under a kilo, a private cremation returns only a tablespoon or two of ash. Their dense fur makes a lovely keepsake clipping if it's taken before cremation.
What happens if my rabbit dies while I'm away from Ghent?
Ask your pet sitter to cover your rabbit with a towel, lay them in a sturdy box with the lid closed and leave it in the coolest room, then phone your vet. Most practices will hold a small pet in their cold room for a few days until you're back. The priority while you're away is the survivor: someone needs to check they're eating and producing droppings every day.
