Rabbit and guinea pig cremation around Ottawa
Ottawa families use the Rideau Canal paths, the Greenbelt trails and the parks along the Ottawa River in every season, but through the long winter most pets live indoors, and a pet who spent months curled by a heating vent leaves a big gap. Some families ask for ashes back so they can keep them at home or take a small portion to a favourite lookout in spring. Confirm in writing that the cremation is individual.
Ottawa ranges from dense neighbourhoods like the Glebe and Centretown to suburbs such as Kanata, Orléans and Barrhaven, and it also includes a surprising amount of farmland within city limits. Many families have a yard, but for months of the year the ground is frozen, so burying a pet at home is often impossible. Most Ottawa owners ask for home collection and a cremation.
Lots of Ottawa households keep more than one small pet: a bonded pair of rabbits, a trio of guinea pigs, two or three ferrets sharing a hammock. In a busy flat or shared house, the first practical question is often where the survivors will spend the next few hours. Keep them in their usual space, let them see their companion if you can, and arrange drop-off or collection of the body once they've settled.
Ottawa is home to about 1,017,000 people, the 2nd-largest of the 15 Ontario communities we cover.
For a second opinion on price, Kingston (91 miles), Laval (97 miles) and Montreal (103 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Ottawa routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
81.1%[1]
CANA projects the Canadian cremation rate will reach 81.1% by 2030.
6 million[2]
About 6 million US households keep small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.
4.3 years[3]
Pet rabbits in England have a median age at death of 4.3 years.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
We built the this numbers from Embrace Pet Insurance and American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 National Pet Owners Survey release, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Burial or cremation: the local habit
When about 81.1%[1] of people in Canada are cremated, many children have already seen a grandparent's urn on a mantelpiece, so a small urn for a guinea pig doesn't seem strange to them. Some families place the pet's container beside a relative's. Others prefer something the child can hold. There's no convention to follow, and a small box of ashes can move between rooms as feelings change.
That Canada rate is a human one, published by CANA Industry Statistical Information (2030). We quote it for Ottawa only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Seasons and small-pet aftercare in Ottawa
However you're travelling in or around Ottawa, a small pet's body travels best lying flat in a lidded box, wedged so it can't slide. Put the box on the floor of the car or strap it in with a seatbelt, keep the car at a comfortable temperature and take the most direct route. If you're walking or using transit, a sturdy shopping bag around the box keeps things discreet.

Budgeting for a small pet's aftercare in Ottawa
Some Canadian humane societies bundle euthanasia and communal cremation at a single price. The Hamilton/Burlington SPCA, for example, lists CAD 225 to 275 for cats, plus HST[5]. Not every region has a scheme like that, but it's worth asking a humane society or SPCA near Ottawa whether they help with small pets, especially if cost is a worry this month.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Ontario: Ontario costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Local rules worth knowing in Ontario
For small mammals, the rules worth knowing in Ontario cover three things: burying on your own property, scattering ashes, and what to do if a rabbit may have died of a disease such as RHDV2. The first two are straightforward. The third is a good reason to call your vet before a garden burial whenever a rabbit dies without warning.
City of Ottawa publishes Ottawa's official guidance. Note that it deals with public collection, not with booking a private cremation.
In Canada, exotic-experienced vets are concentrated in larger cities, so rural families may travel for a rabbit's or ferret's end-of-life care. Most provinces allow burial on your own land, but frozen ground rules it out for much of the winter. RHDV2 has been found in parts of Canada, including British Columbia, so mention any sudden rabbit death to your vet before burial.
Start with the Ontario rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Ottawa's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
What to do when your rabbit or guinea pig dies in Ottawa
- Ask your pet sitter to call you first, and not to touch anything until they have, should your pet die while you're out of Ottawa.
- Talk them through the basics by phone: a towel around your pet, a closed box and the coolest room in the house.
- Ask your vet to hold your pet in cold storage until you get back. A few days is no trouble for most practices.
- Make sure the survivor is being watched, particularly for appetite and droppings, and leave the sitter with the vet's phone number.
- Decide on aftercare when you're back and can think clearly. This isn't a choice you have to make from a hotel.
- Say goodbye at the clinic if you'd like to, before the cremation or burial goes ahead.
Keepsakes and memorials for small pets
Ottawa winters are long and cold, with snow on the ground for months, and summers are warm and humid. In winter you may have a little more time if your pet dies at home, but keep the body in a cool room away from heating. If your pet dies on a road or sidewalk, the city has a reporting route; on private property, the owner is responsible for removal.

Questions people ask
How do Canada attitudes to cremation compare?
CANA Industry Statistical Information (2030) puts the Canada human cremation rate at about 81.1%[1]. We show it on the Ottawa page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Ottawa?
The closest communities we cover are Kingston (about 91 miles), Laval (about 97 miles) and Montreal (about 103 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Ottawa too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
What if my rabbit dies at night in Ottawa?
There's no need to go anywhere tonight. Wrap your rabbit in a towel, place them in a box and keep them somewhere cool, in a sealed bag in the fridge if it's warm. Let a bonded partner spend some time with the body. In the morning, call your vet or a crematorium. If you're worried the death was infectious, keep other rabbits away from the bedding until you've spoken to a vet.
My pet was put to sleep. Can I still bury them at home?
You can in most places, but the grave needs to be deep. The drug used for euthanasia stays in the body and can poison foxes, dogs, cats or birds of prey that dig it up. Dig well down, lay a paving slab on top, and keep away from ponds and streams. If that isn't practical, cremation is the safer choice.
My rabbit was only four. Is that young?
Sadly, not unusually. UK vet records put the median age at death at 4.3 years[3] for pet rabbits and 4.03 years[7] for guinea pigs, even though well-kept individuals can reach eight or more. Dental disease and flystrike claim many rabbits early. If your pet died younger than you hoped, it's rarely because you did something wrong.
Do guinea pigs grieve when their cage mate dies?
Many do. A guinea pig that has lost its companion may go quiet, stop wheeking at feeding time or eat less for a few days. Guinea pigs are herd animals, so a lone survivor usually needs company, either more time with you or, once it seems ready, a new companion introduced carefully. If the survivor stops eating altogether, call a vet promptly.
