Why the Canada cremation rate matters here
Around 81.1%[1] of people who die in Canada are cremated. Where cremation is this normal, pet crematoria tend to compete, and some list a separate price for pocket pets rather than charging the same as for a cat. It's worth asking for that price by name. The difference is rarely large, but it tells you the provider handles rabbits and guinea pigs often enough to have thought about them properly.
That Canada rate is a human one, published by CANA Industry Statistical Information (2030). We quote it for Laval only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

A UK trade body has described it as an unregulated market[6], and one directory counts only a handful of US states with laws aimed specifically at pet crematories[7]. Whatever applies in Quebec, your best protection with a small pet is a written note from the provider saying whether the cremation is individual, partitioned or communal, and when the ashes will be returned.
In Canada, exotic-experienced vets are concentrated in larger cities, so rural families may travel for a rabbit's or ferret's end-of-life care. Most provinces allow burial on your own land, but frozen ground rules it out for much of the winter. RHDV2 has been found in parts of Canada, including British Columbia, so mention any sudden rabbit death to your vet before burial.

A checklist for Laval small-pet owners

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Laval?

How do I tell my child their guinea pig has died?
Use simple, true words: their guinea pig died, the body stopped working and they can't feel pain now. Avoid gone to sleep, which can make young children anxious at bedtime. Let them see and stroke their pet if they want to, and give them a part in the goodbye. In one large RSPCA survey, 93.4%[8] of parents said they wanted better guidance on this.
Can I bury my rabbit in the garden in Quebec?
In most places you can bury a pet on land you own, sometimes with local conditions attached. Check with your local council or county if you're unsure, and ask your landlord if you rent. Dig deep enough that foxes and dogs won't reach your pet, set a slab on top, take extra care if your rabbit was put to sleep, and call a vet first if the death was sudden, because of RHDV2.
