Scattering rules rarely cause problems with a small pet, because a rabbit or guinea pig produces so little, rarely more than a small cupful and often much less. Private land with permission is fine almost everywhere. Parks, beaches and nature reserves in Tokyo may have their own rules, so check before you go. Many families end up burying the ashes instead, which avoids the question and gives them a fixed place to visit.
In Japan, rabbits, ferrets and chinchillas are welcomed at pet funeral halls and temples, often with a short ceremony. Communal and individual cremation for pets under 5 kg are both widely offered. Some municipal collection services cremate pets cheaply but don't return the ashes (返骨), so ask before you book if you'd like them home.
Step by step in Minato
- Make sure your pet has really died. A cold room can send a hamster or pygmy hedgehog into a torpor that is easy to mistake for death.
- Warm them gently for 30 minutes, either in cupped hands or tucked against your chest, watching all the while for a slow breath or a tiny twitch.

Is cremation common in Japan?
For people, yes: about 99.97%[1] of Japan deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Minato follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Where are the providers that serve Minato actually based?

You can in most places, but the grave needs to be deep. The drug used for euthanasia stays in the body and can poison foxes, dogs, cats or birds of prey that dig it up. Dig well down, lay a paving slab on top, and keep away from ponds and streams. If that isn't practical, cremation is the safer choice.
Is there a vet in Minato who really knows rabbits and guinea pigs?
Most cities this size have at least one practice with exotics experience, but ask the right question: whether the vet regularly treats rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets or chinchillas, not just whether they'll see them. For end-of-life care, experience matters. Sedating a small, frightened animal calmly takes practice, and an experienced vet will also know which crematorium handles small pets well.
Do chinchillas need anything different at the end?
Chinchillas are sensitive to heat, stress and handling, so a calm, cool room matters. A vet experienced with chinchillas may suggest sedation before euthanasia. Afterwards, because a chinchilla usually weighs well under a kilo, a private cremation returns only a tablespoon or two of ash. Their dense fur makes a lovely keepsake clipping if it's taken before cremation.
