What the local cremation rate tells you
Pet crematoria tend to be plentiful in Japan, where roughly 99.97%[1] of people are cremated, and that usually means shorter waits. Some will cremate a rabbit or guinea pig within a day or two of drop-off and let you collect the ashes that same week. If timing matters to you, perhaps because a child is leaving for camp or a relative is visiting, ask for an expected return date before you choose.
That Japan rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Setagaya only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Keeping a small body cool in Setagaya's climate
A small body is simple to keep safely for a short while whatever the season. Local rules worth knowing in Tokyo
Small-pet burial rules tend to be lighter than those for larger animals. England's groundwater guidance, for example, sets no minimum requirements for small pets buried on your own land; its stricter limits are for larger animals. Rules in Tokyo may differ, so check locally, but for a rabbit or guinea pig the real questions are usually ownership of the land and keeping scavengers out.
In Japan, rabbits, ferrets and chinchillas are welcomed at pet funeral halls and temples, often with a short ceremony. Communal and individual cremation for pets under 5 kg are both widely offered. Some municipal collection services cremate pets cheaply but don't return the ashes (返骨), so ask before you book if you'd like them home.
A checklist for Setagaya small-pet owners
- Put on gloves before touching a rabbit that died without warning or had blood around the mouth or nose. Hands, clothing and bedding can all carry RHDV2.
- Place your rabbit in a sealed bag, then a box with a lid, and make sure the other rabbits stay well clear of both body and hutch.
- Phone your vet before burying or disposing of anything. US federal guidance says to speak with a vet or an animal health official before you act.
- Bag the hay, bedding and litter, then set the bags aside somewhere separate until the vet has told you how to get rid of them.
- Scrub the enclosure, dishes and water bottle with a disinfectant your vet recommends, then let everything dry fully.
- Ask about testing and vaccination for the survivors. Cremation is usually the safest choice for the body while you wait for answers.
Keepsakes and memorials for small pets
Setagaya families spend weekends at Kinuta Park, Komazawa Olympic Park, the Todoroki Valley and along the Tama River, and many pets here lived their whole lives indoors in a quiet residential street. Many families keep the bones at home in a small urn for a while before deciding on anything permanent. Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Setagaya?
Usually yes. Tokyo is about 2 miles away, Minato is about 6 miles away and Kawasaki is about 8 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Setagaya page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 99.97%[1] of Japan residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will I actually get ashes back from my guinea pig?
Yes, from a genuine private cremation. Ash is mostly processed bone, and a median-weight guinea pig returns about 37 g[7] by our estimate, a couple of tablespoons. A rabbit returns more, around 74 g[8]. Ask the provider how they keep very small pets separate, because the real risk isn't losing everything but mixing with other remains.
Should I pick a crematorium for my elderly rabbit in advance?
It helps. Once a rabbit passes about eight, or a guinea pig about five, a short call to your vet about aftercare is a kind thing to do for your future self. Find out who handles their cremations, the price of an individual one and if a vet could come to the house. You won't be tempting fate, and on the day you won't need to make phone calls.
Do chinchillas need anything different at the end?
Chinchillas are sensitive to heat, stress and handling, so a calm, cool room matters. A vet experienced with chinchillas may suggest sedation before euthanasia. Afterwards, because a chinchilla usually weighs well under a kilo, a private cremation returns only a tablespoon or two of ash. Their dense fur makes a lovely keepsake clipping if it's taken before cremation.
My rabbit was only four. Is that young?
Sadly, not unusually. UK vet records put the median age at death at 4.3 years[3] for pet rabbits and 4.03 years[9] for guinea pigs, even though well-kept individuals can reach eight or more. Dental disease and flystrike claim many rabbits early. If your pet died younger than you hoped, it's rarely because you did something wrong.
