Zaragoza, Aragon
How Zaragoza families say goodbye to small pets
Zaragoza's climate is dry and continental: hot summers, cold winters with thick fog along the Ebro, and the cierzo, a strong northwest wind that makes winter days feel bitter. In the heat of July and August, move your pet's body to the coolest room with ice packs and arrange collection quickly. In winter there is more time, provided the body stays away from radiators.
Zaragoza is overwhelmingly a city of flats, from the old buildings of the Casco Histórico and the Magdalena to newer districts like Actur, Valdespartera and Arcosur. If your pet dies in the flat, lift size, stairs and parking all matter. Ask your vet or a provider about collection from home, and mention access details so the right vehicle and enough people come.
In a city the size of Zaragoza, the hard part usually isn't finding a crematorium. It's finding one that handles very small animals with real care. Large metros have several pet crematoria, and at least one or two will see rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets every week. Ask how they keep a two-pound body separate in a chamber built for dogs: a dedicated tray, a smaller unit or a run on its own. Providers who do this often will answer without hesitating.
About 674,000 people live in Zaragoza.
The closest communities we cover are Pamplona (89 miles) and San Sebastian (128 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Zaragoza too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

Why the Spain cremation rate matters here
Cremation covers about 50.11%[1] of human funerals in Spain, which puts it in the middle of the range. Local vets here are used to families who take a small pet home for burial, so if that's your plan, just tell the practice. Ask for a lined box or a pet body bag, and check whether a euthanasia fee includes aftercare you won't be using, so it can be taken off.
The Spain figure comes from Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Timing a small pet's aftercare around Zaragoza's seasons
Seasons shape small-pet aftercare more than people expect. Hot spells bring heatstroke and flystrike in rabbits; wet, cold spells are hard on outdoor guinea pigs and elderly rabbits. In Zaragoza, ask your vet what they see most at this time of year, and whether they'd suggest changes for the survivors: moving a hutch into shade or indoors, adding extra bedding, or checking droppings daily while a bonded partner grieves. A small body itself is easy to keep safe for a day in a lined box somewhere cool.

How much Zaragoza families usually pay
Scandinavian providers show how extras add up. A Norwegian crematorium lists separate cremation from NOK 3,790 and communal from NOK 1,190 for pets of 1 to 20 kg[5], and charges NOK 1,790 more for same-day return of ashes[6]. In Sweden, ashes normally take two to four weeks[7]. Near Zaragoza, ask whether speed costs extra before you pay for it.

Burial and scattering rules in Aragon
Pet cremation is lightly regulated almost everywhere. A UK trade body has described it as an unregulated market[9], and one directory counts only a handful of US states with laws aimed specifically at pet crematories[10]. Whatever applies in Aragon, your best protection with a small pet is a written note from the provider saying whether the cremation is individual, partitioned or communal, and when the ashes will be returned.
A checklist for Zaragoza small-pet owners
- Ask your pet sitter to call you first, and not to touch anything until they have, should your pet die while you're out of Zaragoza.
- Talk them through the basics by phone: a towel around the body, a lid on the box, and the coldest room they can find.
- Ask your vet to hold your pet in their cold room until you're home. Most will do this for a few days without fuss.
- Make sure the survivor is being watched for eating and droppings, and give the sitter your vet's number.
- Decide on aftercare when you're back and can think clearly. This isn't a choice you have to make from a hotel.
- Say goodbye at the clinic if that would help, ahead of the burial or cremation taking place.
Keepsakes and memorials for small pets
Pets in Zaragoza share flats, terraces and small gardens across the city, and many families spend time along the Ebro riverside and in the Parque Grande. Pet cremation is common in Spain, and most vets can arrange it for you. A useful first question is whether the quote is for a private or a shared cremation; after that, ask about the waiting time for ashes and any charge for coming to the house.

Questions people ask
How do Spain attitudes to cremation compare?
Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) puts the Spain human cremation rate at about 50.11%[1]. We show it on the Zaragoza page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Zaragoza?
Usually yes. Pamplona is about 89 miles away and San Sebastian is about 128 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can two bonded rabbits be cremated together in Zaragoza?
Yes, if you ask for a joint cremation. Their ashes are mixed and returned in one container, which many families find comforting. If one partner dies first, you can keep those ashes and ask later for them to be combined or buried together. Put the request in writing, because the default is to keep every pet separate.
Should I pick a crematorium for my elderly rabbit in advance?
It helps. Once a rabbit passes about eight, or a guinea pig about five, a short call to your vet about aftercare is a kind thing to do for your future self. Find out who handles their cremations, the price of an individual one and if a vet could come to the house. You won't be tempting fate, and on the day you won't need to make phone calls.
What should I carry my small pet's body in?
A shoebox, small carrier or sturdy cardboard box works well. Line it with a towel and some of your pet's bedding or hay, and close the lid. In warm weather, put your pet in a sealed bag first. Label the box with your name and your pet's name. A plastic trash bag on its own upsets most people, and a lined box is gentler for everyone.
Can I bury my rabbit in the garden in Aragon?
In most places you can bury a pet on land you own, sometimes with local conditions attached. Check with your local council or county if you're unsure, and ask your landlord if you rent. Dig deep enough that foxes and dogs won't reach your pet, set a slab on top, take extra care if your rabbit was put to sleep, and call a vet first if the death was sudden, because of RHDV2.
