Pamplona, Navarre
How Pamplona families say goodbye to small pets
Most people in Pamplona live in apartment blocks, from the narrow streets of the old town within the city walls to newer districts like Mendillorri and Lezkairu. That means aftercare often starts with getting your pet down stairs or a lift, sometimes without a car. When you contact us, mention your neighborhood and floor, and whether you'd like collection from home or will go through your vet, which is how many people here arrange it.
Pamplona sits between the Pyrenees and the dry south of Navarre, and its weather can change quickly: cold, damp winters with occasional snow and hot summer days, especially in July and August. In summer, cool your pet quickly by wrapping them in a towel and using cool packs, and keep them out of the sun. In winter you have a little more time, but it's still wise to arrange collection within a day or two.
In a city like Pamplona, the crematorium your vet uses may also serve much of the surrounding region, so small pets travel alongside larger animals on the same round. That's fine as long as your pet is labeled and kept in their own bag or box. Ask what identification they use, whether a tag stays with your pet right through the cremation, and whether a private service will be confirmed in writing.
With roughly 201,000 residents, Pamplona is one of the Navarre communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Bilbao, about 72 miles (116 km) away, which is where some providers serving Pamplona are based.
Families in Pamplona often end up using a provider from San Sebastian (39 miles), Bilbao (72 miles) and Zaragoza (89 miles, a larger centre). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

What the local cremation rate tells you
About 50.11%[1] of people in Spain are cremated, and families often find the generations disagree about a pet. Grandparents may assume a rabbit goes in the garden; younger parents may want the ashes kept. If there's a gentle tug of war, remember you can do both: cremate privately and bury the container later in the garden, or keep half and bury half. A small pet's ashes divide easily.
For the Spain figure we rely on Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Pamplona rather than as pet data.
Pamplona weather and your small pet
Seasons shape small-pet aftercare more than people expect. Hot spells bring heatstroke and flystrike in rabbits; wet, cold spells are hard on outdoor guinea pigs and elderly rabbits. In Pamplona, ask your vet what they see most at this time of year, and whether they'd suggest changes for the survivors: moving a hutch into shade or indoors, adding extra bedding, or checking droppings daily while a bonded partner grieves. A small body itself is easy to keep safe for a day in a lined box somewhere cool.

Where the money goes: small pet aftercare in Pamplona
Few European crematoria publish a price just for rabbits, but many have a lowest weight band that covers them. An Irish crematorium lists individual cremation from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg[5], and a German consumer guide lists collective cremation at EUR 85 to 205 and individual at EUR 165 to 375 across pet sizes[6]. Ask a provider near Pamplona for the price for a pet under 3 kg.

Burial and scattering rules in Navarre
For small mammals, the rules worth knowing in Navarre cover three things: burying on your own property, scattering ashes, and what to do if a rabbit may have died of a disease such as RHDV2. The first two are straightforward. The third is a good reason to call your vet before a garden burial whenever a rabbit dies without warning.
A checklist for Pamplona small-pet owners
- Note your pet's weight where you have it. Chinchillas, ferrets, guinea pigs and rabbits are all charged at the lowest weight band, but a figure makes quoting easier.
- Ring two providers covering Pamplona, your vet's crematorium plus an independent one, and ask how they treat a pet this small.
- Decide who travels. For a pet this small, driving them in yourself is easy and often avoids a collection fee.
- Pack the box carefully: line it with a towel and some bedding, use a sealed bag in warm weather, and tape a label to the top giving your name and your pet's.
- Ask what can go with your pet, such as a hay ball, a ferret's favorite sock or a letter. Some items have to be removed first.
- Agree the total in writing, including the container and when you can collect the ashes.
- Plan for the ashes: a little urn, scattering them, or burying them beneath a shrub.
Small keepsakes for a small life
Pet cremation is increasingly common across Spain, and in Pamplona many owners choose a private cremation with the ashes returned. City flats rarely have space for burial, and rules on burying animals vary, so cremation is often the simplest option. Some people keep the ashes at home, while others take a small portion to the mountains or countryside where they spent time with their pet, after checking local rules.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Pamplona?
Usually yes. San Sebastian is about 39 miles away, Bilbao is about 72 miles away and Zaragoza is about 89 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Pamplona page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) reports about 50.11%[1] of Spain residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will I have to travel to Bilbao to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Bilbao (roughly 72 miles from Pamplona) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Are there crematoria near Pamplona that are used to small pets?
Few crematoria anywhere take only small pets, but many in and around Pamplona handle rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets every week. Ask how often they cremate animals under 5 lb and what they use to keep them separate. A provider who answers confidently and in detail is usually one who does it well.
Do chinchillas need anything different at the end?
Chinchillas are sensitive to heat, stress and handling, so a calm, cool room matters. A vet experienced with chinchillas may suggest sedation before euthanasia. Afterwards, because a chinchilla usually weighs well under a kilo, a private cremation returns only a tablespoon or two of ash. Their dense fur makes a lovely keepsake clipping if it's taken before cremation.
Can a ferret be cremated with its hammock or toys?
Often, but ask first. Natural fabrics and paper usually go in; plastic, metal buckles, bells and synthetic fleece may need to be removed. Many families put in a sock the ferret stole or a short note, and keep the harness and hammock at home. If something has to come out, ask the provider to return it with the ashes.
