Burial or cremation: the local habit
Cremation covers about 50.11%[1] of human funerals in Spain, which puts it in the middle of the range. Local vets here are used to families who take a small pet home for burial, so if that's your plan, just tell the practice. Ask for a lined box or a pet body bag, and check whether a euthanasia fee includes aftercare you won't be using, so it can be taken off.
That Spain rate is a human one, published by Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). We quote it for Bilbao only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Keeping a small body cool in Bilbao's climate
A small body is simple to keep safely for a short while whatever the season. Lay your pet on a towel in a shoebox or carrier, add a little of their hay or fleece, and put the box somewhere cool, dark and away from other animals. If it will be more than a few hours before you reach a vet or crematorium in or near Bilbao, a fridge or a cool box with wrapped ice packs is kind and entirely normal. Nobody at the clinic will think twice about it, and it gives the family time to gather.

What the rules in Basque Country mean for a rabbit or ferret
Pet cremation is lightly regulated almost everywhere. A UK trade body has described it as an unregulated market[9], and one directory counts only a handful of US states with laws aimed specifically at pet crematories[10]. Whatever applies in Basque Country, your best protection with a small pet is a written note from the provider saying whether the cremation is individual, partitioned or communal, and when the ashes will be returned.
A calm plan for the next 24 hours
- Ask to see your pet if the death happened at a Bilbao clinic in your absence, perhaps during a dental under anaesthetic. Most practices are able to find you a quiet room.
- Ask what happened in plain terms, and whether anything could have been done. It's a fair question and a good vet will answer kindly.
- Decide whether to take your pet home, so you can bury them or say goodbye there, or whether the clinic should arrange the cremation instead.
- Take the bonded partner's needs into account. If the survivor didn't see the body, consider bringing your pet home briefly first.
- Confirm the aftercare in writing while you're still at the clinic: private or communal, and roughly when the ashes should be back.
- Ask for the bill to be itemized, with the cremation listed on its own line rather than folded into the treatment.

Which nearby towns can I compare with Bilbao?

What should I carry my small pet's body in?
A shoebox, small carrier or sturdy cardboard box works well. Line it with a towel and some of your pet's bedding or hay, and close the lid. In warm weather, put your pet in a sealed bag first. Label the box with your name and your pet's name. A plastic trash bag on its own upsets most people, and a lined box is gentler for everyone.
Do guinea pigs grieve when their cage mate dies?
Many do. A guinea pig that has lost its companion may go quiet, stop wheeking at feeding time or eat less for a few days. Guinea pigs are herd animals, so a lone survivor usually needs company, either more time with you or, once it seems ready, a new companion introduced carefully. If the survivor stops eating altogether, call a vet promptly.
Is private cremation worth it for a guinea pig?
It is if you want the ashes back to keep, scatter or bury later, particularly if you might move house. If a garden grave or communal cremation feels right, there's no need to pay more. A guinea pig's size doesn't make either choice less meaningful; what matters is what you'll be glad of a year from now.
Will I actually get ashes back from my guinea pig?
Yes, from a genuine private cremation. Ash is mostly processed bone, and a median-weight guinea pig returns about 37 g[11] by our estimate, a couple of tablespoons. A rabbit returns more, around 74 g[12]. Ask the provider how they keep very small pets separate, because the real risk isn't losing everything but mixing with other remains.
