Small Pet Cremation in Madrid: what to know
Prices for rabbit, guinea pig and ferret cremation vary across Madrid more because of collection and extras than the cremation itself. A small pet sits in the lightest weight band everywhere. Driving your pet to a crematorium yourself is often free; a home collection in a big city or a long rural round can cost as much as the service. Ask for a written total wherever you are.
Across Madrid, the most useful single thing a small-pet owner can do is ask their vet two questions before they're needed: which crematorium do you use, and can you arrange a private cremation for a rabbit or guinea pig? Knowing the answers takes away most of the scramble on the day. Our city guides, starting with Madrid, cover the rest.

Burial or cremation: the local habit
About 50.11%[1] of people in Madrid are cremated, and families often find the generations disagree about a pet. Grandparents may assume a rabbit goes in the garden; younger parents may want the ashes kept. If there's a gentle tug of war, remember you can do both: cremate privately and bury the container later in the garden, or keep half and bury half. A small pet's ashes divide easily.
That Madrid rate is a human statistic published by Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.
Where the money goes: small pet aftercare in Madrid
In much of Europe, home burial of a small pet on your own land is allowed with conditions, which keeps costs low for many families in Madrid. Germany, for example, requires at least 50 cm of soil cover[2]. If you'd rather cremate, the table shows published prices from several countries; small mammals usually fall in the lightest band, and collective cremation costs a fraction of individual.
Few European crematoria publish a price just for rabbits, but many have a lowest weight band that covers them. An Irish crematorium lists individual cremation from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg[3], and a German consumer guide lists collective cremation at EUR 85 to 205 and individual at EUR 165 to 375 across pet sizes[4]. Ask a provider near Madrid for the price for a pet under 3 kg.
| Country | Collective (communal) | Individual (ashes returned) |
|---|---|---|
| Ireland (under 2 kg) | Not listed | From EUR 150 |
| Germany (all sizes) | EUR 85 to 205 | EUR 165 to 375 |
| Norway (1 to 20 kg) | From NOK 1,190 | NOK 3,790 |

What Madrid allows for small pets
For small mammals, the rules worth knowing in Madrid cover three things: burying on your own property, scattering ashes, and what to do if a rabbit may have died of a disease such as RHDV2. The first two are straightforward. The third is a good reason to call your vet before a garden burial whenever a rabbit dies without warning.
Step by step in Madrid
- Put on gloves before touching a rabbit that died without warning or had blood around the mouth or nose. Hands, clothing and bedding can all carry RHDV2.
- Place your rabbit in a sealed bag inside a lidded box, and keep the other rabbits away from the body and the hutch.
- Phone your vet before burying or disposing of anything. US federal guidance says to speak with a vet or an animal health official before you act.
- Bag the hay, bedding and litter, then set the bags aside somewhere separate until the vet has told you how to get rid of them.
- Scrub the enclosure, dishes and water bottle with a disinfectant your vet recommends, then let everything dry fully.
- Ask about testing and vaccination for the rabbits that remain. Until you have answers, cremating the body is generally the safer option.
Ways Madrid families remember rabbits and guinea pigs
A median-weight rabbit leaves about 74 g[6] of ash and a guinea pig about 37 g[7], by our estimate. That's enough to share: a pinch in a pendant for each child, some buried in the garden in Madrid and the rest in a keepsake urn. The urn size calculator helps you choose containers that won't look half empty.

Questions people ask
Is it easy to find an exotic vet in Madrid?
It's easier in the big cities, including Madrid, than in rural areas, and many small-pet owners in smaller towns travel for rabbit, chinchilla or ferret care. For euthanasia and aftercare any vet can help, but an exotics-experienced vet is more likely to sedate first and to know which crematorium handles small pets well.
How many Madrid communities do you cover?
We have small pet aftercare guides for 1 communities in Madrid, including Madrid. Each covers local weather, typical prices, burial rules and how drop-off or collection usually works there.
Should children be involved in a small pet's goodbye?
Usually, yes, in a way that fits their age. Children who help line the box, choose a toy to go with their pet or pick the spot in the garden tend to cope better than those shielded from it. A small pet's death is often a child's first loss, so honest words and a simple ritual matter more than the details of the aftercare.
How dangerous is summer heat for rabbits in Madrid?
More than most owners expect. Rabbits and chinchillas overheat far more easily than dogs or cats, and heatstroke is a common cause of sudden summer deaths. In the warmest parts of Madrid, such as Madrid where summer highs average about °F, keep small pets in the coolest room during hot spells, and if one dies, keep the body chilled until collection.
Do winters in Madrid affect burying a small pet?
In the colder parts of Madrid, frozen ground can make a safe-depth grave impossible for weeks or months. Many families keep a small pet in a sealed box somewhere cold for a few days, or cremate and bury the ashes in spring. In Madrid, among the coldest places we cover, average winter lows reach about °F.
Should I worry about rabbit viruses in Madrid?
Rabbit hemorrhagic disease is present in wild rabbits across much of Madrid, and vaccination is standard advice for pet rabbits. If a pet rabbit dies suddenly, keep other rabbits away from its bedding and speak to your vet before burial, so they can advise on testing and on cleaning the hutch.
