Caring for a small pet's body in Madrid
Most madrileños live in apartment buildings, often older blocks with small lifts and inner courtyards, and few have gardens. Burying a pet in parks or other public land isn't permitted, so cremation is the usual choice, arranged through a vet or directly with a provider on the city's outskirts. Home collection is common for families without a car. Share your barrio and building details when you ask for options.
Madrid's summers are hot and dry, often topping 35°C in July and August, while winters are cold, with frosty nights. In summer, cool your pet's body quickly using a towel, ice packs and the coolest room in the flat. In winter you have a little more time, but arranging collection within a day or two is still wise, especially in an apartment with central heating.
Rabbit rescues and small-animal welfare groups are active in most large cities, including Madrid. They're a useful, often overlooked source of advice at the end: volunteers usually know which local vets are gentle with rabbits and which crematoria return ashes reliably. Many also run bonding sessions, where a grieving survivor can meet possible new companions in neutral territory when the time feels right.
Madrid's population is around 3,223,000.
Our pages for Valladolid (101 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Madrid as well.

Cremation habits in Spain and your small pet
With about 50.11%[1] of people in Spain cremated, cremation is the majority choice but not an overwhelming one. That leaves room for local habits. In rented homes and apartments, private cremation is the practical route for a rabbit or ferret. In family homes with a yard, a garden grave is still common. Many families choose cremation specifically after a euthanasia, because the drug in the body can harm scavengers.
Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) is where the Spain figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Madrid tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Heat, cold and timing in Madrid
However you're travelling in or around Madrid, a small pet's body travels best lying flat in a lidded box, wedged so it can't slide. Put the box on the floor of the car or strap it in with a seatbelt, keep the car at a comfortable temperature and take the most direct route. If you're walking or using transit, a sturdy shopping bag around the box keeps things discreet.

Pricing a private cremation for a pocket pet in Madrid
Few European crematoria publish a price just for rabbits, but many have a lowest weight band that covers them. An Irish crematorium lists individual cremation from EUR 150 for pets under 2 kg[5], and a German consumer guide lists collective cremation at EUR 85 to 205 and individual at EUR 165 to 375 across pet sizes[6]. Ask a provider near Madrid for the price for a pet under 3 kg.

Burial and scattering rules in Spain
Most decisions after a small pet dies are yours alone. Where Spain and your local council, city or county may have a say is burial: depth, distance from wells and streams, and whether renters can bury at all. Landlords and homeowners' associations can add their own conditions, so check your lease or HOA guidelines too.
The first day, step by step
- Talk to your vet about timing once your ferret's illness is no longer responding to treatment. Many families choose a day a little early rather than a little late.
- Book a home visit where a vet near Madrid offers them; otherwise choose a quiet appointment at the clinic. Find out if sedation comes first.
- Plan a good last day: the treat they love most, a sleep in their hammock, and an hour or two alongside their cage mates.
- Choose aftercare beforehand and tell the vet, so your ferret can leave with them or stay with you as you've decided.
- Take a print or clipping during the visit, while you're still together.
- Let cage mates see the body, then keep an eye on their appetite for the next few days.
Remembering your small pet in Madrid
Many Madrid families remember their pet in a sunny balcony corner, the shade of an inner courtyard, or the Retiro, Casa de Campo or the riverside park along the Manzanares. Scattering ashes on public land usually needs permission, so plenty of families keep the ashes at home or take them to the mountains of the Sierra de Guadarrama, or to a family village elsewhere in Spain where the pet spent summers.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Spain?
For people, yes: about 50.11%[1] of Spain deaths end in cremation, according to Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Madrid follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Is there a vet in Madrid who really knows rabbits and guinea pigs?
Most cities this size have at least one practice with exotics experience, but ask the right question: whether the vet regularly treats rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets or chinchillas, not just whether they'll see them. For end-of-life care, experience matters. Sedating a small, frightened animal calmly takes practice, and an experienced vet will also know which crematorium handles small pets well.
Should I pick a crematorium for my elderly rabbit in advance?
It helps. Once a rabbit passes about eight, or a guinea pig about five, a short call to your vet about aftercare is a kind thing to do for your future self. Find out who handles their cremations, the price of an individual one and if a vet could come to the house. You won't be tempting fate, and on the day you won't need to make phone calls.
Could my rabbit's sudden death near Madrid be a virus?
It could. Rabbit hemorrhagic disease, including the RHDV2 strain, is found in wild and pet rabbits in the UK, across much of Europe and in Australia and New Zealand, and it can kill a rabbit within hours. Vaccination is standard advice for that reason. If a rabbit dies without warning, talk to your vet before burying the body or cleaning the hutch, to protect your other rabbits.
How do I tell my child their guinea pig has died?
Use simple, true words: their guinea pig died, the body stopped working and they can't feel pain now. Avoid gone to sleep, which can make young children anxious at bedtime. Let them see and stroke their pet if they want to, and give them a part in the goodbye. In one large RSPCA survey, 93.4%[8] of parents said they wanted better guidance on this.
Do guinea pigs grieve when their cage mate dies?
Many do. A guinea pig that has lost its companion may go quiet, stop wheeking at feeding time or eat less for a few days. Guinea pigs are herd animals, so a lone survivor usually needs company, either more time with you or, once it seems ready, a new companion introduced carefully. If the survivor stops eating altogether, call a vet promptly.
