How Abu Dhabi families say goodbye to small pets
Abu Dhabi's summer heat is extreme, with temperatures regularly above 40°C and high humidity on the coast. If your pet dies at home in those months, bring them into the coolest air-conditioned room immediately, place ice packs wrapped in towels under the body, and contact your vet quickly. Aftercare options in the emirate are more limited than in many Western cities, so your vet is usually the first point of contact.
Many Abu Dhabi pet owners are expatriates living in apartment towers on the island or in gated villa communities on the mainland, such as those on Saadiyat, Yas and Al Reem. Building management often has its own procedures for moving an animal through lobbies and lifts. Your vet can usually arrange collection and aftercare; mention your community and building when you ask, as access to some compounds is controlled.
Lots of Abu Dhabi households keep more than one small pet: a bonded pair of rabbits, a trio of guinea pigs, two or three ferrets sharing a hammock. In a busy flat or shared house, the first practical question is often where the survivors will spend the next few hours. Keep them in their usual space, let them see their companion if you can, and arrange drop-off or collection of the body once they've settled.
About 1,483,000 people live in Abu Dhabi.

Why the United Arab Emirates cremation rate matters here
Pet cremation has grown in most countries over the past two decades, and small mammals have been part of that shift. In Abu Dhabi, you'll find vets who arrange it routinely and others who rarely see a rabbit. Asking your vet one direct question, which crematorium do you use for small pets and is it private, tells you most of what you need to know.
Seasons and small-pet aftercare in Abu Dhabi
However you're travelling in or around Abu Dhabi, a small pet's body travels best lying flat in a lidded box, wedged so it can't slide. Put the box on the floor of the car or strap it in with a seatbelt, keep the car at a comfortable temperature and take the most direct route. If you're walking or using transit, a sturdy shopping bag around the box keeps things discreet.

Small pet cremation prices for Abu Dhabi
In the UAE, euthanasia of a small animal costs around AED 400 to 500 including municipal disposal[4], while a separate cremation with ashes returned costs far more, around AED 2,300 to 2,700 for pets up to 30 kg[5]. Elsewhere the numbers differ, but the pattern is common: getting ashes back is the expensive part. Decide on that first when you ask Abu Dhabi providers.

What United Arab Emirates allows for small pets
Small-pet burial rules tend to be lighter than those for larger animals. England's groundwater guidance, for example, sets no minimum requirements for small pets buried on your own land; its stricter limits are for larger animals. Rules in United Arab Emirates may differ, so check locally, but for a rabbit or guinea pig the real questions are usually ownership of the land and keeping scavengers out.
In the UAE, pet burial isn't generally permitted, and the municipal route is a mass cremation with no ashes returned. Private shared or separate cremation is available; for a rabbit or ferret under 5 kg, shared cremation costs about AED 700 to 900. The heat is extreme for much of the year, so keep a small body chilled until collection.
The first day, step by step
- Ask your pet sitter to call you first, before they move anything, if your pet dies while you're away from Abu Dhabi.
- Talk them through the basics by phone: a towel around the body, a lid on the box, and the coldest room they can find.
- Ask your vet to hold your pet in their cold room until you're home. Most will do this for a few days without fuss.
- Make sure the survivor is being watched, particularly for appetite and droppings, and leave the sitter with the vet's phone number.
- Decide on aftercare when you're back and can think clearly. This isn't a choice you have to make from a hotel.
- Say goodbye at the clinic if you'd like to, before the cremation or burial goes ahead.
Remembering your small pet in Abu Dhabi
Pet cremation is available in the UAE, but facilities are few, and many families rely on their vet to arrange it. Burial on residential land is generally not permitted in communities and rented villas. If you want your pet's ashes back, ask specifically for an individual cremation, how long it will take, and whether you can receive a certificate if you plan to travel with the ashes.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Abu Dhabi?
The closest communities we cover are Emirates Hills (about 65 miles), Dubai (about 76 miles) and Sharjah (about 89 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Abu Dhabi too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
What happens if my rabbit dies while I'm away from Abu Dhabi?
Ask your pet sitter to cover your rabbit with a towel, lay them in a sturdy box with the lid closed and leave it in the coolest room, then phone your vet. Most practices will hold a small pet in their cold room for a few days until you're back. The priority while you're away is the survivor: someone needs to check they're eating and producing droppings every day.
Do guinea pigs grieve when their cage mate dies?
Many do. A guinea pig that has lost its companion may go quiet, stop wheeking at feeding time or eat less for a few days. Guinea pigs are herd animals, so a lone survivor usually needs company, either more time with you or, once it seems ready, a new companion introduced carefully. If the survivor stops eating altogether, call a vet promptly.
Should I pick a crematorium for my elderly rabbit in advance?
It helps. Once a rabbit passes about eight, or a guinea pig about five, a short call to your vet about aftercare is a kind thing to do for your future self. Find out who handles their cremations, the price of an individual one and if a vet could come to the house. You won't be tempting fate, and on the day you won't need to make phone calls.
What if my rabbit dies at night in Abu Dhabi?
There's no need to go anywhere tonight. Wrap your rabbit in a towel, place them in a box and keep them somewhere cool, in a sealed bag in the fridge if it's warm. Let a bonded partner spend some time with the body. In the morning, call your vet or a crematorium. If you're worried the death was infectious, keep other rabbits away from the bedding until you've spoken to a vet.
Can I bury my rabbit in the garden in United Arab Emirates?
In most places you can bury a pet on land you own, sometimes with local conditions attached. Check with your local council or county if you're unsure, and ask your landlord if you rent. Dig deep enough that foxes and dogs won't reach your pet, set a slab on top, take extra care if your rabbit was put to sleep, and call a vet first if the death was sudden, because of RHDV2.
