Brighton, England
Rabbit and guinea pig cremation around Brighton
Brighton's seaside climate is mild, breezy and often damp, with few very hot days and winters that rarely stay frozen for long. That gives you a little more time than in hotter places, but a pet's body should still be wrapped and kept in the coolest room, and collection arranged within a day or two. On a warm summer day, add ice packs near the body.
Brighton and Hove is a city of Regency terraces, converted flats, narrow Victorian streets and steep hills running up from the seafront, and parking is notoriously tight. If you'd like your pet collected from home, mention the floor, the stairs, whether there's a lift and where a vehicle can realistically stop. Many residents don't drive, so home collection is often the most practical option here.
Most families in Brighton take a small pet to the vet or crematorium themselves. A rabbit or guinea pig fits in a shoebox or carrier on the back seat, and dropping them off yourself avoids a collection fee that can be bigger than the cremation charge. If you'd rather not make that drive, especially with upset children in the car, ask about home collection; several local providers are likely to offer it.
With roughly 290,000 residents, Brighton is the 12th-largest of the 33 England communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is London, about 47 miles (76 km) away, which is where some providers serving Brighton are based.
If you want to compare providers, look at Guildford (34 miles), Portsmouth (42 miles) and Richmond (45 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

Burial or cremation: the local habit
Cremation is the default for people in England, at about 83.0%[1]. For small pets the picture is more mixed, because a guinea pig fits so easily into a garden grave. Many local families do both: they choose a private cremation, then bury the little tin of ashes under the rabbit's favorite bush. That keeps the garden ritual children often want, without the worry of foxes digging or leaving a grave behind when you move.
That England rate is a human one, published by Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024). We quote it for Brighton only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Brighton weather and your small pet
Whatever the weather in Brighton, the rule for a small pet is the same: keep the body cool, covered and out of the sun. A rabbit or guinea pig cools and stiffens faster than a dog, so wrap them gently soon after death while they're still easy to position, then place them in a box lined with their bedding. In warm weather, a sealed bag inside the box and a spot in the fridge or a cooler keeps them peaceful for a day or two. In cold weather, an unheated garage does the same job.

Pricing a private cremation for a pocket pet in Brighton
The competition regulator's final remedies require every first-opinion vet practice to offer a communal cremation option and set out its cremation prices[5]. The regulator also found owners may be paying in the order of £100 more for individual cremations than strong competition would allow[6]. For a rabbit near Brighton, ask your practice for its list, then phone an independent crematorium for comparison.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for England: England costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Burial and scattering rules in England
If your pet was put to sleep, the drug used stays in the body. Since 2003, US labels for euthanasia drugs have carried a warning that euthanized animals must be disposed of so that scavenging wildlife can't eat them[8]. That's why vets in England and elsewhere often suggest cremation after euthanasia, or a well-protected grave with a heavy slab over it.
In the UK, rabbits and guinea pigs are among the most common pets, and vets see small-pet deaths every day. Following the competition regulator's review, practices are expected to offer a communal option and set out cremation prices, so ask for the list. Burial at home is generally allowed if you own the property and your pet didn't carry a disease dangerous to people. Vaccinating surviving rabbits against RHD2 and myxomatosis is standard advice.
We keep England's burial and scattering rules in one place: the England rules summary. Before a home burial in Brighton, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
Your first few hours, in order
- Check gently and take a moment. Small pets often die quietly overnight. If you're unsure, look for breathing and a heartbeat; your vet can confirm by phone or in person.
- Let the bonded partner say goodbye. Put the survivor with the body for 30 minutes to an hour somewhere calm, then separate them.
- Wrap your pet in a towel or fleece, then settle them into a carrier or shoebox. Find a cool spot for the box; if the weather is warm, seal them in a bag and use the fridge.
- Take a keepsake now if you want one. Snip a little fur, or press a foot into clay. Once the cremation has happened there's no second chance.
- Call your vet if the death was sudden, especially with a rabbit, so they can advise on RHDV2 before you bury anything or clean the hutch.
- Choose burial or cremation. If cremating, ask a provider serving Brighton for private cremation confirmed in writing.
- Watch the survivor over the following days: are they eating, drinking, passing droppings?
Marking the loss of a rabbit, guinea pig or ferret
Many Brighton families feel drawn to the South Downs when they think of remembering a pet: the open chalk hills at Devil's Dyke, the woods above Stanmer Park, or the long view back over the sea. Scattering ashes on National Park land or a beach is often done quietly, but it's courteous to check with the landowner first. Keeping ashes at home avoids any doubt.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Brighton?
The closest communities we cover are Guildford (about 34 miles), Portsmouth (about 42 miles) and Richmond (about 45 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Brighton too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Where are the providers that serve Brighton actually based?
Some are local, and some run from London, about 47 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Brighton and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Why does the Brighton page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024) reports about 83.0%[1] of England residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
What happens if my rabbit dies while I'm away from Brighton?
Ask your pet sitter to cover your rabbit with a towel, lay them in a sturdy box with the lid closed and leave it in the coolest room, then phone your vet. Most practices will hold a small pet in their cold room for a few days until you're back. The priority while you're away is the survivor: someone needs to check they're eating and producing droppings every day.
Can pet hedgehogs be cremated near Brighton?
Yes. African pygmy hedgehogs are cremated like other small mammals, usually in the lowest price band. Adults often weigh just 300 to 600 grams[9], so a private cremation returns about a tablespoon of ash. Many hedgehogs die after an illness such as a tumor or wobbly hedgehog syndrome, so it helps to decide on aftercare with your vet before the final appointment.
How do I tell my child their guinea pig has died?
Use simple, true words: their guinea pig died, the body stopped working and they can't feel pain now. Avoid gone to sleep, which can make young children anxious at bedtime. Let them see and stroke their pet if they want to, and give them a part in the goodbye. In one large RSPCA survey, 93.4%[10] of parents said they wanted better guidance on this.
