Rabbit and guinea pig cremation in San Diego

San Diego, California

How San Diego families say goodbye to small pets

San Diego is spread across mesas and canyons, from beach towns to inland suburbs, and a drive from Oceanside to Chula Vista or from Point Loma to Escondido can take a long time. Most pets live in single-family homes or apartments. Say which community you live in when you request options, because mileage often shapes the pickup fee and how soon ashes come back.

San Diego's coast is mild, with August highs around 71°F and no freezing months, so there is usually a little time to think after a pet dies at home. Inland valleys run much hotter in summer, and fall Santa Ana winds can bring heat and wildfire risk. Keep your pet in a cool room with cool packs wrapped in towels. Many homes sit on hillsides or canyon lots that make backyard burial difficult.

Plenty of people in San Diego don't own a car, and that's no barrier with a small pet. A rabbit or guinea pig in a closed, lined box can travel by taxi or rideshare without anyone knowing what's inside, and most drivers wouldn't mind if they did. If you'd rather not travel at all, ask the crematorium about collection from your door. Some charge less for a pet that one person can carry, so mention your pet's size when you phone.

San Diego is home to about 1,406,106 people, the 2nd-largest of the 307 California communities we cover.

If you want to compare providers, look at Chula Vista (7 miles), Lemon Grove (7 miles) and La Mesa (9 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

70.5%[1]

The NFDA projected California's cremation rate at 70.5% for 2024.

6 million[2]

About 6 million US households keep small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.

4.3 years[3]

Pet rabbits in England have a median age at death of 4.3 years.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

We built the this numbers from American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 National Pet Owners Survey release and Embrace Pet Insurance, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

How California thinks about cremation

When about 70.5%[1] of people in California are cremated, many children have already seen a grandparent's urn on a mantelpiece, so a small urn for a guinea pig doesn't seem strange to them. Some families place the pet's container beside a relative's. Others prefer something the child can hold. There's no convention to follow, and a small box of ashes can move between rooms as feelings change.

We take the California rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for San Diego, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

Cool, covered and safe: San Diego weather notes

Whatever the weather in San Diego, the rule for a small pet is the same: keep the body cool, covered and out of the sun. A rabbit or guinea pig cools and stiffens faster than a dog, so wrap them gently soon after death while they're still easy to position, then place them in a box lined with their bedding. In warm weather, a sealed bag inside the box and a spot in the fridge or a cooler keeps them peaceful for a day or two. In cold weather, an unheated garage does the same job.

Seasonal scene for planning aftercare in San Diego

Budgeting for a small pet's aftercare in San Diego

The euthanasia is often a separate bill from the cremation, and families in San Diego are sometimes surprised by it. There's no national figure for rabbits, but CareCredit's 2025 study puts cat euthanasia at $158 in a clinic and $359 at home[5], the closest published benchmark for a small pet. Exotics vets may charge a little more for sedation, so ask for both figures together.

What the rules in California mean for a rabbit or ferret

In the US, the USDA asks rabbit owners not to dispose of a rabbit's body without first consulting a veterinarian or animal health officials, because of RHDV2. That advice sits alongside any rules in California. In practice it means one phone call to the practice before you dig, any time a rabbit dies suddenly or for no clear reason. Guinea pigs, ferrets and chinchillas can't catch this virus.

City of San Diego Get It Done publishes San Diego's official guidance. Note that it deals with public collection, not with booking a private cremation. The official California local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in San Diego.

Start with the California rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat San Diego's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.

A calm plan for the next 24 hours

  1. Ask your pet sitter to call you first, before they move anything, if your pet dies while you're away from San Diego.
  2. Talk them through the basics by phone: a towel around the body, a lid on the box, and the coldest room they can find.
  3. Ask your vet to hold your pet in cold storage until you get back. A few days is no trouble for most practices.
  4. Make sure the survivor is being watched for eating and droppings, and give the sitter your vet's number.
  5. Decide on aftercare when you're back and able to think. There's no need to choose from a hotel room.
  6. Say goodbye at the clinic if that would help, ahead of the burial or cremation taking place.

Ways San Diego families remember rabbits and guinea pigs

The City of San Diego separates dead-animal removal by location: city streets and public rights-of-way, county roads and unincorporated areas, private property, and state highways each follow different routes. Removal from private property carries a fee, and the city asks residents not to put dead animals in trash or recycling bins. None of those routes is a private cremation, so for your own pet's ashes, book one with a vet or pet crematory.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from San Diego?

Usually yes. Chula Vista is about 7 miles away, Lemon Grove is about 7 miles away and La Mesa is about 9 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

How do California attitudes to cremation compare?

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the California human cremation rate at about 70.5%[1]. We show it on the San Diego page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

My pet was put to sleep. Can I still bury them at home?

You can in most places, but the grave needs to be deep. The drug used for euthanasia stays in the body and can poison foxes, dogs, cats or birds of prey that dig it up. Dig well down, lay a paving slab on top, and keep away from ponds and streams. If that isn't practical, cremation is the safer choice.

Can pet hedgehogs be cremated near San Diego?

Yes. African pygmy hedgehogs are cremated like other small mammals, usually in the lowest price band. Adults often weigh just 300 to 600 grams[7], so a private cremation returns about a tablespoon of ash. Many hedgehogs die after an illness such as a tumor or wobbly hedgehog syndrome, so it helps to decide on aftercare with your vet before the final appointment.

Should my other rabbit see the body?

Many keepers find it helps. Letting the survivor sniff, groom or lie beside the body for a while often seems to reduce searching and restlessness afterwards. Give them 30 minutes to an hour somewhere quiet. Then watch closely: a grieving rabbit that stops eating or passing droppings can develop gut stasis within a day, which needs a vet quickly.

Can two bonded rabbits be cremated together in San Diego?

Yes, if you ask for a joint cremation. Their ashes are mixed and returned in one container, which many families find comforting. If one partner dies first, you can keep those ashes and ask later for them to be combined or buried together. Put the request in writing, because the default is to keep every pet separate.
