Small pet aftercare in Clovis, New Mexico

Clovis, New Mexico

How Clovis families say goodbye to small pets

July in Clovis brings highs in the low 90s, and from December to February nights freeze, often with a biting wind sweeping across the open plains. Spring can bring dust storms that turn the sky brown. In hot weather keep your pet indoors in the coolest room and have it collected, or take it to a provider, before evening, and ask where cremation takes place, as distances out here add up.

Clovis is the Curry County seat on the flat High Plains of eastern New Mexico, a few miles from the Texas line, with Cannon Air Force Base just to the west. A good number of households are military families on multi-year assignments, living in rentals or base housing where digging a grave simply isn't an option. For them, cremation, with ashes that can move to the next posting, is the practical route.

If you keep several rabbits, guinea pigs or chinchillas, perhaps for showing or breeding, you may lose a few animals over the years. Ask the crematorium serving Clovis whether it offers a standing arrangement for small animals: communal cremation for some, private for the ones you'd like to keep. Clear labeling matters when more than one animal travels at a time.

Clovis's population is around 37,127, the 7th-largest of the 11 New Mexico communities we cover.

Families in Clovis often end up using a provider from Plainview (86 miles), Amarillo (94 miles, a larger centre) and Lubbock (97 miles, a larger centre). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

Burial or cremation: the local habit

Cremation is routine for people in New Mexico, at about 70.5%[1], and that familiarity sometimes pushes families toward private cremation without much thought. Communal cremation is a perfectly caring choice for a small pet, especially if you'd have scattered the ashes anyway or already have a garden memorial for earlier pets. The one thing to settle before you choose is whether you'd like anything back.

The New Mexico percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Clovis, not as a count of pets.

Cool, covered and safe: Clovis weather notes

Seasons like Clovis's shape how families remember a rabbit or guinea pig. Many keep the ashes indoors through the freezing months and hold a small garden burial or scattering once it warms up, well before July's heat arrives. Spring is also when a bonded survivor often settles best with a new companion, if you're thinking about one.

Both ends of the year bring risks for the survivors. In June, July, August and September, watch the remaining rabbits for heat stress and flystrike. In January, February and December, make sure an outdoor hutch is dry and sheltered, and remember that a grieving rabbit huddling alone has also lost its warm partner. Check they're eating and passing droppings every day for at least a week.

How much Clovis families usually pay

If you'd rather bury than cremate but don't have a yard, a pet cemetery is the other route. One pet insurer's published US prices for a plot for pets under 30 lb start at about $400 to $600[5], several times the cost of a private cremation. For most Clovis small-pet owners, the realistic choice is between a garden grave, which costs almost nothing, a communal cremation and a private one.

What New Mexico allows for small pets

Small-pet burial rules tend to be lighter than those for larger animals. England's groundwater guidance, for example, sets no minimum requirements for small pets buried on your own land; its stricter limits are for larger animals. Rules in New Mexico may differ, so check locally, but for a rabbit or guinea pig the real questions are usually ownership of the land and keeping scavengers out.

Start with the New Mexico rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Clovis's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.

A calm plan for the next 24 hours

  1. Ask your pet sitter to call you first, and not to touch anything until they have, should your pet die while you're out of Clovis.
  2. Talk them through the basics by phone: a towel around the body, a lid on the box, and the coldest room they can find.
  3. Ask your vet to hold your pet in their cold room until you're home. Most will do this for a few days without fuss.
  4. Make sure the survivor is being watched, particularly for appetite and droppings, and leave the sitter with the vet's phone number.
  5. Decide on aftercare when you're back and able to think. There's no need to choose from a hotel room.
  6. Say goodbye at the clinic if that would help, ahead of the burial or cremation taking place.

Small keepsakes for a small life

Open sky, cropland and grassland, and the shallow playa lakes that fill after heavy rain surround Clovis, and the edge of town is where plenty of residents take their pets for open air. Scattering on private farmland needs the owner's permission. Military families expecting a move often keep the ashes in a sealed urn so their companion can travel with them to the next base.

Questions people ask

Does the Clovis climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 93°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.

Which nearby towns can I compare with Clovis?

The closest communities we cover are Plainview (about 86 miles), Amarillo (about 94 miles) and Lubbock (about 97 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Clovis too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Why does the Clovis page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 70.5%[1] of New Mexico residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

What should I do if my rabbit dies in the Clovis heat?

Bring your rabbit indoors straight away, out of the sun. Wrap them loosely in a towel, place them in a sealed bag inside a box and keep it in the fridge, a cooler with wrapped ice packs or the coolest air-conditioned room. Then check the survivors, because rabbits and chinchillas overheat quickly: give them shade, frozen water bottles to lie against and fresh water.

Can a ferret be cremated with its hammock or toys?

Often, but ask first. Natural fabrics and paper usually go in; plastic, metal buckles, bells and synthetic fleece may need to be removed. Many families put in a sock the ferret stole or a short note, and keep the harness and hammock at home. If something has to come out, ask the provider to return it with the ashes.

Can I scatter my rabbit's ashes in a Clovis park?

Public parks usually have their own rules, and some ask you to get permission first. With only a few tablespoons of ash, many families find burying a small tin or scattering in a private garden easier and more meaningful. If you do scatter somewhere public, choose a quiet spot away from paths and water, on a still day.
