Finding the right help for a small pet in Amarillo
Many Amarillo families grew up burying pets in the backyard or out on family land, and that's still common on larger lots. The hard, dry caliche soil under much of the Panhandle can make digging tough, though, and renters and people on small lots often can't. Choosing a private cremation, with the ashes brought back to you, lets you keep your pet close and decide later whether to bury the ashes at home or out on the ranch.
Amarillo's weather swings hard. July highs reach the low 90s with dry heat, winters bring freezing nights from December through February, and the wind blows nearly all year. Blizzards, hail and dust storms can all close roads. In summer, keep a pet's body on a towel in an air-conditioned room with ice packs around it and call quickly; in a winter storm, a cool room indoors buys you time until roads clear.
Some Amarillo families only realize their rabbit was unwell after the fact: a quiet evening, no droppings, a pet found stretched out in the hutch next morning. If the death was sudden and you keep other rabbits, call your vet before burying. Rabbit hemorrhagic disease can travel on bedding, shoes and hands, and your vet will know whether it has turned up in the area recently.
With roughly 205,130 residents, Amarillo is the 17th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover.

Burial or cremation: the local habit
In Texas, about 55.7%[1] of people are cremated, and burial still has plenty of supporters. That mix gives small-pet owners real options, including pet cemeteries that accept rabbits and guinea pigs alongside cats and dogs. A cemetery plot costs more than a garden grave, but it suits families who rent, expect to move or want somewhere that will be tended.

Cool, covered and safe: Amarillo weather notes
In summer, keep a small body out of the sun and in the coolest part of the house, or chilled in a sealed bag in the fridge. In winter, an unheated garage does the same job. Either way, a sealed bag inside a sturdy box keeps your pet peaceful and protected while you decide, and makes the handover to a vet or crematorium in Amarillo much simpler.
It helps to keep a small aftercare kit ready all year in a climate like Amarillo's: a sturdy lidded box, an old towel, a few sealable bags and a cool box with ice packs. In June, July and August you'll need the cool box within an hour or two. In January, February and December the garage or a porch does the same job. Having the kit ready saves a frantic search for a box on a hard day.

Where the money goes: small pet aftercare in Amarillo
The euthanasia is often a separate bill from the cremation, and families in Amarillo are sometimes surprised by it. There's no national figure for rabbits, but CareCredit's 2025 study puts cat euthanasia at $158 in a clinic and $359 at home[5], the closest published benchmark for a small pet. Exotics vets may charge a little more for sedation, so ask for both figures together.

Burial, ashes and paperwork in Texas
Pet cremation is lightly regulated almost everywhere. A UK trade body has described it as an unregulated market[7], and one directory counts only a handful of US states with laws aimed specifically at pet crematories[8]. Whatever applies in Texas, your best protection with a small pet is a written note from the provider saying whether the cremation is individual, partitioned or communal, and when the ashes will be returned.
The official Texas local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Amarillo.
Start with the Texas rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Amarillo's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
Step by step in Amarillo
- Check gently and take a moment. Small pets often die quietly overnight. If you're unsure, look for breathing and a heartbeat; your vet can confirm by phone or in person.
- Let the bonded partner say goodbye. Put the survivor with the body for 30 minutes to an hour somewhere calm, then separate them.
- Wrap your pet in a towel or fleece and place them in a shoebox or carrier. Keep the box somewhere cool; in warm weather, use a sealed bag and the fridge.
- Take a keepsake now if you want one. Snip a little fur, or press a foot into clay. Once the cremation has happened there's no second chance.
- Call your vet if the death was sudden. With a rabbit in particular, they'll want to talk you through RHDV2 before the hutch is cleaned or anything goes into the ground.
- Choose burial or cremation. If cremating, ask a provider serving Amarillo for private cremation confirmed in writing.
- Watch the survivor over the following days: are they eating, drinking, passing droppings?
Small keepsakes for a small life
Amarillo spreads across the flat High Plains of the Texas Panhandle, with older brick neighborhoods near Wolflin and the medical district, newer subdivisions to the south and west, and ranchettes on the edges of town. Distances in the Panhandle are big, and Lubbock, the nearest large city, is about two hours south. Say which part of town or which county you're in, so we can shortlist providers who collect from home.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Amarillo?
The closest communities we cover are Plainview (about 71 miles), Clovis (about 94 miles) and Lubbock (about 114 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Amarillo too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How do Texas attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Texas human cremation rate at about 55.7%[1]. We show it on the Amarillo page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Amarillo?
January, February and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 93°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
What should I carry my small pet's body in?
A shoebox, small carrier or sturdy cardboard box works well. Line it with a towel and some of your pet's bedding or hay, and close the lid. In warm weather, put your pet in a sealed bag first. Label the box with your name and your pet's name. A plastic trash bag on its own upsets most people, and a lined box is gentler for everyone.
My pet was put to sleep. Can I still bury them at home?
You can in most places, but the grave needs to be deep. The drug used for euthanasia stays in the body and can poison foxes, dogs, cats or birds of prey that dig it up. Dig well down, lay a paving slab on top, and keep away from ponds and streams. If that isn't practical, cremation is the safer choice.
My hedgehog is cold and still. Could it be hibernating?
It could. African pygmy hedgehogs kept below a comfortable room temperature can attempt hibernation, which can look alarmingly final: a chilly, floppy animal whose breaths are hard to see. Hold your hedgehog close under your shirt or wrapped in a warm fleece for half an hour, and call a vet. Hamsters can do something similar in a cold room. If there's no response after warming and a vet confirms death, aftercare can wait until you're ready.
