Roswell, New Mexico
How Roswell families say goodbye to small pets
July afternoons in Roswell average about 97F, and the dry heat lingers into September; winter is short, with freezing nights mostly in December and January. In summer, choose the room the air conditioner keeps coolest and lay your pet there on an old blanket, with a wrapped cold pack nearby, and arrange a pickup or drive to the provider that day. Winter offers only a little extra leeway.
Roswell is the Chaves County seat in the Pecos Valley of southeastern New Mexico, hours by road from any bigger city. Most people live in single-story ranch houses on generous lots, with older homes near downtown and small acreages at the edges. Because distances are real here, ask any aftercare provider where the cremation itself takes place and how many days it will be before the ashes come back.
Ashes for small pets from Roswell can take a little longer to return, because the crematorium may collect from country vets only once or twice a week. That's normal. If a date matters, perhaps a birthday or a school holiday so the children can be there when the ashes come home, mention it when you book and ask whether you can collect them in person.
Roswell is home to about 46,878 people, the 5th-largest of the 11 New Mexico communities we cover.
Families in Roswell often end up using a provider from Carlsbad (69 miles), Clovis (106 miles) and Las Cruces (149 miles, a larger centre). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

6 million[2]
About 6 million US households keep small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.
4.3 years[3]
Pet rabbits in England have a median age at death of 4.3 years.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
We built the this numbers from O'Neill et al. 2020, Veterinary Record and Embrace Pet Insurance, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

What the local cremation rate tells you
Cremation is the default for people in New Mexico, at about 70.5%[1]. For small pets the picture is more mixed, because a guinea pig fits so easily into a garden grave. Many local families do both: they choose a private cremation, then bury the little tin of ashes under the rabbit's favorite bush. That keeps the garden ritual children often want, without the worry of foxes digging or leaving a grave behind when you move.
That New Mexico rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Roswell only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Keeping a small body cool in Roswell's climate
Guinea pigs and ferrets can't cool themselves well either, and neither does well above about 80°F. With July highs near 97°F in Roswell, keep every small pet in the coolest room during the afternoon, not only the rabbits. If you're driving a body to a vet or crematorium in the heat, run the air conditioning, keep the box low in the footwell away from direct sun, and go straight there without stopping for errands.
Hot months in Roswell also bring flies, and flystrike is the single most common recorded cause of death in English pet rabbits, at 10.9%[5] in one study. After a death in warm weather, cover the body and bring it indoors promptly. For the surviving rabbits, check their rear ends every day through May, June, July, August and September; older or overweight rabbits that can't clean themselves are most at risk.

Budgeting for a small pet's aftercare in Roswell
The spread of quotes in Roswell can be wider than you'd guess for such a small pet. One pet insurer's published US ranges run from about $30 for a communal cremation to $500 or more for a private one[6], with partitioned cremation somewhere in between. A rabbit won't reach the top of that range, but extras add up quickly, so ask each provider for one written total that includes collection and the container.

What the rules in New Mexico mean for a rabbit or ferret
Pet cremation is lightly regulated almost everywhere. A UK trade body has described it as an unregulated market[8], and one directory counts only a handful of US states with laws aimed specifically at pet crematories[9]. Whatever applies in New Mexico, your best protection with a small pet is a written note from the provider saying whether the cremation is individual, partitioned or communal, and when the ashes will be returned.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the New Mexico level first; our New Mexico rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Roswell or your HOA adds anything.
A checklist for Roswell small-pet owners
- Book the appointment for a calm time of day, preferably with a vet used to ferrets, guinea pigs or rabbits, and ask if they'll come to your home.
- Decide on aftercare beforehand, so you can simply ask the vet to take your pet afterwards, or bring a lined box to take them home.
- Bring the bonded companion if it's practical, or plan for them to see the body when you get home.
- Ask for a paw or foot print at the appointment. Many vets will make one for you.
- Confirm private or communal on paper, and find out the date you can expect to pick up the ashes.
- If you plan a garden burial after euthanasia, go deep and cover the spot with a paving slab. The euthanasia drug remains in your pet's body and could harm any wildlife that digs there.
Keeping a small companion close
Bottomless Lakes State Park, with its deep blue sinkhole lakes, and the wetlands of Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge lie just outside town, and both are places Roswell residents know well. Leaving ashes at a state park or wildlife refuge isn't something to do without asking. Most families keep the urn indoors or choose a spot on their own land or a relative's property.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in New Mexico?
For people, yes: about 70.5%[1] of New Mexico deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Roswell follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
How does Roswell's weather affect small pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Roswell, with average highs around 97°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Roswell?
The closest communities we cover are Carlsbad (about 69 miles), Clovis (about 106 miles) and Las Cruces (about 149 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Roswell too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Can two bonded rabbits be cremated together in Roswell?
Yes, if you ask for a joint cremation. Their ashes are mixed and returned in one container, which many families find comforting. If one partner dies first, you can keep those ashes and ask later for them to be combined or buried together. Put the request in writing, because the default is to keep every pet separate.
Can I bury my rabbit in the garden in New Mexico?
In most places you can bury a pet on land you own, sometimes with local conditions attached. Check with your local council or county if you're unsure, and ask your landlord if you rent. Dig deep enough that foxes and dogs won't reach your pet, set a slab on top, take extra care if your rabbit was put to sleep, and call a vet first if the death was sudden, because of RHDV2.
Do guinea pigs grieve when their cage mate dies?
Many do. A guinea pig that has lost its companion may go quiet, stop wheeking at feeding time or eat less for a few days. Guinea pigs are herd animals, so a lone survivor usually needs company, either more time with you or, once it seems ready, a new companion introduced carefully. If the survivor stops eating altogether, call a vet promptly.
