Cremation is routine for people in Oregon, at about 77.7%[1], and that familiarity sometimes pushes families toward private cremation without much thought. Why does the Ashland page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024) reports about 77.7%[1] of Oregon residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Ashland?
Usually yes. Medford is about 12 miles away, Central Point is about 16 miles away and Roseburg is about 78 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is private cremation worth it for a guinea pig?
It is if you want the ashes back to keep, scatter or bury later, particularly if you might move house. If a garden grave or communal cremation feels right, there's no need to pay more. A guinea pig's size doesn't make either choice less meaningful; what matters is what you'll be glad of a year from now.
Should my other rabbit see the body?
Many keepers find it helps. Letting the survivor sniff, groom or lie beside the body for a while often seems to reduce searching and restlessness afterwards. Give them 30 minutes to an hour somewhere quiet. Then watch closely: a grieving rabbit that stops eating or passing droppings can develop gut stasis within a day, which needs a vet quickly.
How long does it take to get small pet ashes back in Ashland?
Many families receive private cremation ashes in about 5-10 days[9], sometimes sooner if you drop your pet off yourself. Where the crematorium collects from vets only once or twice a week, it can take longer. Ask for an expected date when you book, and whether you can collect in person rather than waiting for the vet's next delivery.
My pet was put to sleep. Can I still bury them at home?
