Garland, Texas
Caring for a small pet's body in Garland
Garland summers run hot, with August highs around 97F, and spring brings hail, severe storms and tornado warnings; the city was hit by a deadly tornado the day after Christmas in 2015. In summer heat, bring your pet into the coldest air-conditioned room, place ice in sealed bags along the body, and try to arrange cremation within the day. Keep a storm plan for pets too.
Many Garland houses have a backyard where burial is possible, but heavy blackland clay that cracks in summer and turns sticky in rain makes digging hard work, and some neighborhoods have rules against it. Most families choose cremation. Ask each provider what private and communal cremation cost in total, what comes back to you, and how many days until the ashes are ready.
In a city like Garland, the crematorium your vet uses may also serve much of the surrounding region, so small pets travel alongside larger animals on the same round. That's fine as long as your pet is labeled and kept in their own bag or box. Ask what identification they use, whether a tag stays with your pet right through the cremation, and whether a private service will be confirmed in writing.
Garland's population is around 249,625, the 13th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. Plano, roughly 8 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Garland run from there.
The closest communities we cover are Sachse (5 miles), Rowlett (5 miles) and Richardson (6 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Garland too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

What the local cremation rate tells you
In Texas, about 55.7%[1] of people are cremated, and burial still has plenty of supporters. That mix gives small-pet owners real options, including pet cemeteries that accept rabbits and guinea pigs alongside cats and dogs. A cemetery plot costs more than a garden grave, but it suits families who rent, expect to move or want somewhere that will be tended.

Garland weather and your small pet
Garland summers are hard on small mammals. August averages highs around 97°F, and rabbits and chinchillas start struggling with heat well before that, often once it climbs past the high 70s. Heatstroke is one of the most common reasons an otherwise healthy rabbit dies suddenly in summer. If it happens, bring your pet indoors, wrap them loosely in a towel and keep them in the coolest room while you make a plan.
Heat matters for garden burial too. Sun-baked ground in Garland can be hard to dig deeply in August, and a shallow grave is exactly what foxes, coyotes and dogs find. If the soil is like concrete, soak it the evening before, or choose cremation and bury the ashes later when the weather cools. Ashes come to no harm on a shelf in the meantime.

Where the money goes: small pet aftercare in Garland
The euthanasia is often a separate bill from the cremation, and families in Garland are sometimes surprised by it. There's no national figure for rabbits, but CareCredit's 2025 study puts cat euthanasia at $158 in a clinic and $359 at home[5], the closest published benchmark for a small pet. Exotics vets may charge a little more for sedation, so ask for both figures together.

What Texas allows for small pets
Pet cremation is lightly regulated almost everywhere. A UK trade body has described it as an unregulated market[7], and one directory counts only a handful of US states with laws aimed specifically at pet crematories[8]. Whatever applies in Texas, your best protection with a small pet is a written note from the provider saying whether the cremation is individual, partitioned or communal, and when the ashes will be returned.
Texas keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Garland.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Texas level first; our Texas rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Garland or your HOA adds anything.
Step by step in Garland
- Ask to see your pet if they died at a Garland clinic while you weren't there, for instance under anaesthetic for a dental procedure. Most practices will make a quiet room ready.
- Ask what happened in plain terms, and whether anything could have been done. It's a fair question and a good vet will answer kindly.
- Decide whether to take your pet home, so you can bury them or say goodbye there, or whether the clinic should arrange the cremation instead.
- Take the bonded partner's needs into account. If the survivor didn't see the body, consider bringing your pet home briefly first.
- Confirm the aftercare in writing while you're still at the clinic: private or communal, and roughly when the ashes should be back.
- Ask for the bill to be itemized, with the cremation listed on its own line rather than folded into the treatment.
Remembering your small pet in Garland
Garland is a northeast Dallas County suburb built largely in the 1950s through the 1980s, with streets of brick ranch houses, fenced backyards and alleys behind them, stretching east to the shore of Lake Ray Hubbard. Nearly everyone drives, and Dallas-area providers are close. Let the provider know if your pet is already at a clinic or still at home, and whether the alley gate is the easiest way in.

Questions people ask
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Garland?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 97°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Why does the Garland page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 55.7%[1] of Texas residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will I have to travel to Plano to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Plano (roughly 8 miles from Garland) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Garland?
Usually yes. Sachse is about 5 miles away, Rowlett is about 5 miles away and Richardson is about 6 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
What happens if my rabbit dies while I'm away from Garland?
Ask your pet sitter to cover your rabbit with a towel, lay them in a sturdy box with the lid closed and leave it in the coolest room, then phone your vet. Most practices will hold a small pet in their cold room for a few days until you're back. The priority while you're away is the survivor: someone needs to check they're eating and producing droppings every day.
How do I keep my other rabbits safe in a Garland heatwave?
Move hutches into deep shade or bring rabbits indoors to the coolest room. Frozen water bottles wrapped in a towel, a ceramic tile to lie on and lightly dampened ears all help. Avoid handling during the hottest hours. Chinchillas need even more care: keep them in a room below the mid 70s°F. Watch for panting, drooling or floppiness and call a vet at once if you see them.
