Saying goodbye to a rabbit or guinea pig in West

West, Texas

Caring for a small pet's body in West

Winters in West are colder than many Texans expect, with January lows averaging about 34 degrees. On a cold night, an unheated utility room or enclosed porch can keep a pet's body cool until morning, though it should not be allowed to freeze if the family wants to say goodbye in person. August is another matter: afternoons near 97 degrees mean care should be arranged the same day.

West is a small McLennan County town on I-35, roughly twenty miles north of Waco, which is where most specialist vets and aftercare providers for the area are based. Some Waco services include West in their regular coverage; others treat it as an out-of-town call with a mileage fee. Ask up front, and check whether dropping your pet at your own vet would save money.

Rabbits and cavies are popular youth livestock projects around towns like West, and a child who shows animals may lose one mid-season. Treat it as a real loss even if the animal was kept partly for showing. Many families bury a show rabbit at home, others choose private cremation so the child can keep a small tin. Either way, let the child decide how involved they want to be.

With roughly 2,629 residents, West is the 278th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Grand Prairie, about 61 miles (98 km) away, which is where some providers serving West are based.

Families in West often end up using a provider from Hillsboro (15 miles, a larger centre), Whitney (17 miles) and Waco (18 miles, a larger centre). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

55.7%[1]

The NFDA projected Texas's cremation rate at 55.7% for 2024.

6 million[2]

About 6 million US households keep small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.

4.3 years[3]

Pet rabbits in England have a median age at death of 4.3 years.

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

The published sources behind those figures are Embrace Pet Insurance and American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 National Pet Owners Survey release.

A small pet at home in West

Burial or cremation: the local habit

Cremation covers about 55.7%[1] of human funerals in Texas, which puts it in the middle of the range. Local vets here are used to families who take a small pet home for burial, so if that's your plan, just tell the practice. Ask for a lined box or a pet body bag, and check whether a euthanasia fee includes aftercare you won't be using, so it can be taken off.

We take the Texas rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for West, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

Cool, covered and safe: West weather notes

If a long weekend or holiday means no crematorium in West can take your pet for several days during June, July, August and September, a freezer is the kindest place for a small body. Seal your pet in a freezer bag, set it in a small box and freeze it. Tell the crematorium when you drop your pet off; there's no need to defrost first, and it makes no difference to a private cremation.

A summer power cut or a failed air conditioner in West is a real danger for small mammals, and it's also when some families lose one. Keep a cool box and a few ice packs in the freezer through June, July, August and September. If a pet dies, the same kit keeps the body safe until a vet or crematorium opens, and meanwhile the frozen packs, wrapped in a towel, give the survivors something cool to lie against.

How much West families usually pay

With a small pet, you're paying mostly for careful handling rather than chamber time. A median 2 kg rabbit returns about 74 g[5] of ash and a guinea pig about 37 g[6], by our estimate, so the urn can be tiny and inexpensive. In West, the biggest swing in price usually comes from collection: dropping your pet off yourself is often free, while a home visit can cost as much as the cremation.

The Texas price table breaks costs down by size; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Burial, ashes and paperwork in Texas

In the US, the USDA asks rabbit owners not to dispose of a rabbit's body without first consulting a veterinarian or animal health officials, because of RHDV2. That advice sits alongside any rules in Texas. In practice it means one phone call to the practice before you dig, any time a rabbit dies suddenly or for no clear reason. Guinea pigs, ferrets and chinchillas can't catch this virus.

To find your county or city office in Texas, start with the official Texas local government directory.

The Texas page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. West's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.

A calm plan for the next 24 hours

  1. Note your pet's weight if you know it. Rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets and chinchillas all sit in the lightest price band, but it helps with quotes.
  2. Ring two providers covering West, your vet's crematorium plus an independent one, and ask how they treat a pet this small.
  3. Decide who travels. For a pet this small, driving them in yourself is easy and often avoids a collection fee.
  4. Pack the box carefully: line it with a towel and some bedding, use a sealed bag in warm weather, and tape a label to the top giving your name and your pet's.
  5. Ask what can go with your pet. A letter, a hay ball or the sock your ferret loved are common choices, though the crematorium may need to take certain things out beforehand.
  6. Agree the total in writing, including the container and when you can collect the ashes.
  7. Plan for the ashes: a small urn, a scattering, or burying them under a plant.

Keepsakes and memorials for small pets

When choosing an urn, a common rule of thumb is about one cubic inch of space for every pound your pet weighed in good health. A ten-pound cat needs a small urn; a large rabbit or a hefty tortoise may need a little more. If you plan to divide the ashes or keep a portion in jewelry, a slightly smaller main urn is fine.

Questions people ask

Will I have to travel to Grand Prairie to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Grand Prairie (roughly 61 miles from West) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Why does the West page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 55.7%[1] of Texas residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from West?

Usually yes. Hillsboro is about 15 miles away, Whitney is about 17 miles away and Waco is about 18 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Does the West climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In August, with highs near 97°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.

What is RHDV2 and why does it matter for rabbit aftercare?

Rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus type 2 kills 50-100%[7] of infected rabbits, often with no warning signs. It was first found in a US pet rabbit in 2018 and has since spread to wild rabbits across much of the West. The USDA asks owners to speak to a vet or animal health officials before disposing of a rabbit's body[8], because the virus survives in soil and on bedding.

Can I drop my rabbit off at the crematorium myself?

Usually, yes, and for a small pet it's often the simplest option. Call ahead so they expect you, bring your pet wrapped in a towel in a sturdy box, and keep the car cool. Dropping off yourself often avoids a collection fee and lets you see where your pet will be cared for. Some crematoria near West will even let you wait.
