Wichita Falls, Texas
How Wichita Falls families say goodbye to small pets
Wichita Falls is the main city of the North Texas plains, roughly fifteen miles south of the Red River and the Oklahoma border. Brick ranch houses on wide lots, older streets around Midwestern State University and newer subdivisions on the southwest side make up most of town. Space is less scarce than in the big metros, yet more families here now pick cremation. Ask services whether they drive out into rural Wichita County.
Sheppard Air Force Base trains thousands of airmen each year, and many military households live in Wichita Falls on short assignments with pets that have followed them from state to state. When one of those companions dies, relatives are usually far away and the next move may be months off. Cremation lets the family bring their animal along, so ask for a sealed, sturdy container that will survive packing and shipping.
Guinea pigs, rabbits and hamsters are common classroom and youth-club pets, and when one dies it can affect a whole group of children at once. If you're a teacher or leader in Wichita Falls, a simple, honest assembly moment helps, and so does letting the children make cards. Agree aftercare with the family or school first: communal cremation through the school's vet is common, but some classes like to keep a tiny urn.
With roughly 101,951 residents, Wichita Falls is the 42nd-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover.
Families in Wichita Falls often end up using a provider from Altus (68 miles), Gainesville (81 miles) and Ardmore (82 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
55.7%[1]
The NFDA projected Texas's cremation rate at 55.7% for 2024.
6 million[2]
About 6 million US households keep small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.
4.3 years[3]
Pet rabbits in England have a median age at death of 4.3 years.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
If a number here surprises you, the primary material is American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 National Pet Owners Survey release and O'Neill et al. 2020, Veterinary Record; we only apply it to this.

Local funeral customs and a very small pet
In Texas, about 55.7%[1] of people are cremated. Pet crematoria are established around most larger towns, and they take rabbits, ferrets and chinchillas as a matter of routine. If you're torn between a garden grave and cremation, one simple test helps: will you still live here in five years, and does it matter to you that your pet comes along if you don't?
For the Texas figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Wichita Falls rather than as pet data.
Timing a small pet's aftercare around Wichita Falls's seasons
Heat matters for garden burial too. Sun-baked ground in Wichita Falls can be hard to dig deeply in July, and a shallow grave is exactly what foxes, coyotes and dogs find. If the soil is like concrete, soak it the evening before, or choose cremation and bury the ashes later when the weather cools. Ashes come to no harm on a shelf in the meantime.
In June, July, August and September, a small body warms up quickly once it's out of the shade. If your rabbit or guinea pig dies in Wichita Falls's heat and collection isn't immediate, place them in a sealed bag inside a box and keep it in the fridge or a cooler with wrapped ice packs. That can feel stark, but it's exactly what vets and crematoria suggest, and it keeps your pet peaceful for a day or two.

Pricing a private cremation for a pocket pet in Wichita Falls
Local price levels matter too. Bank of America card data show pet care spending running well above the US average in Seattle and San Francisco, and below it in San Antonio, St Louis and Atlanta[5]. Expect Wichita Falls quotes to follow the local cost of living. If burial away from home appeals, the median whole-body burial for a small pet across five US cemetery lists was about $350[6], by our estimate.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Texas: Texas costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Garden burial, disease and the rules in Texas
Pet cremation is lightly regulated almost everywhere. A UK trade body has described it as an unregulated market[8], and one directory counts only a handful of US states with laws aimed specifically at pet crematories[9]. Whatever applies in Texas, your best protection with a small pet is a written note from the provider saying whether the cremation is individual, partitioned or communal, and when the ashes will be returned.
The official Texas local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Wichita Falls.
For Texas's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Texas guide. Local rules in Wichita Falls can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
The first day, step by step
- Check gently and take a moment. Small pets often go quietly at night. If in doubt, watch the chest and feel for a pulse, or ring the vet, who can confirm over the phone or in person.
- Let the bonded partner say goodbye. Put the survivor with the body for 30 minutes to an hour somewhere calm, then separate them.
- Wrap your pet in a towel or fleece, then settle them into a carrier or shoebox. Find a cool spot for the box; if the weather is warm, seal them in a bag and use the fridge.
- Take a keepsake now if you'd like one: a clipping of fur or a clay print of a foot. It can't be done after cremation.
- Call your vet if the death was sudden, especially with a rabbit, so they can advise on RHDV2 before you bury anything or clean the hutch.
- Choose burial or cremation. For cremation, get a provider serving Wichita Falls to confirm in writing that it's private.
- Watch the survivor for the next few days: eating, drinking and droppings.
Marking the loss of a rabbit, guinea pig or ferret
Of the Texas cities in this region, Wichita Falls has some of the widest swings in weather: July highs average about 97°F, and December and January nights usually slip below freezing, near 30°F. In summer, move your companion somewhere cool and shaded indoors at once. A winter death is less urgent, since an unheated utility room stays cold. Tornado season each spring is taken seriously here, and many homes have storm shelters.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Wichita Falls?
Usually yes. Altus is about 68 miles away, Gainesville is about 81 miles away and Ardmore is about 82 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How does Wichita Falls's weather affect small pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Wichita Falls, with average highs around 97°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Why does the Wichita Falls page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 55.7%[1] of Texas residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
What is RHDV2 and why does it matter for rabbit aftercare?
Rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus type 2 kills 50-100%[10] of infected rabbits, often with no warning signs. It was first found in a US pet rabbit in 2018 and has since spread to wild rabbits across much of the West. The USDA asks owners to speak to a vet or animal health officials before disposing of a rabbit's body[11], because the virus survives in soil and on bedding.
Do chinchillas need anything different at the end?
Chinchillas are sensitive to heat, stress and handling, so a calm, cool room matters. A vet experienced with chinchillas may suggest sedation before euthanasia. Afterwards, because a chinchilla usually weighs well under a kilo, a private cremation returns only a tablespoon or two of ash. Their dense fur makes a lovely keepsake clipping if it's taken before cremation.
My rabbit was only four. Is that young?
Sadly, not unusually. UK vet records put the median age at death at 4.3 years[3] for pet rabbits and 4.03 years[12] for guinea pigs, even though well-kept individuals can reach eight or more. Dental disease and flystrike claim many rabbits early. If your pet died younger than you hoped, it's rarely because you did something wrong.
