How to read and compare cremation quotes for a small pet
A clear quote lists the cremation fee for your pet's weight band plus every extra: collection, container, prints and any rush fee. In the UK, only 52%[1] of cremation buyers remembered being told the price at all.

What should a small pet cremation quote include?
A proper quote names the service type (private, partitioned or communal), the price for your pet's weight band, and every extra as its own line: collection, after-hours or weekend fees, the container the ashes come back in, keepsakes like a paw print, and any express return charge. The total at the bottom should be what you actually pay.
Most confusion comes from quotes that give only the headline cremation fee. For a rabbit or guinea pig that fee is small, so the extras can easily double the bill. Asking for it in writing, even as a text or email, is normal and no reputable provider will mind.

Rush service is a good example of a cost that's easy to agree to in the moment: one industry guide puts 24-hour return at an extra $50 to $150[2] on top of the standard fee, against a normal turnaround of about a week. Unless you need the ashes for a specific day, standard timing is fine.

What do providers actually charge for a small pet?
Published prices for pocket pets are rarer than for dogs, but the lightest weight band gives a good guide. Here's what we found in several countries. These are published examples and national guides, not quotes.

Who you buy from
Is it cheaper to go through your vet or a crematorium directly?
Sometimes, not always. Buying through the vet is convenient: they hold your pet, arrange collection and hand you the ashes. But you're paying for that convenience. By our calculation from the UK regulator's figures, individual cremation at large vet groups works out about 15%[9] dearer than independent crematoria's published prices for the same size of pet, and the regulator's final report concluded owners may be overpaying by around £100[10] per individual cremation.
Very few people compare. 89%[11] of UK cremation buyers didn't, and only 2%[12] of vet websites reviewed showed cremation prices at all. You're allowed to ask your vet for the price and the name of the crematorium, then make one call to an independent to compare. Our local pages can help you find one.

Who pays
Will pet insurance pay for cremation?
Standard accident and illness policies usually cover euthanasia when it's medically necessary, but not cremation[13]. Petplan UK is similar[14]. Some US insurers sell end-of-life add-ons: Lemonade's paid up to $500[15], Embrace's wellness option could reimburse up to $650[16], and Figo's paid up to $250[17].
Relatively few rabbits and guinea pigs are insured, and exotic-pet policies vary, so check your own wording. If you do have cover, keep the itemized invoice: insurers reimburse against line items, which is one more reason to get a written quote.
Spending wisely
Where can you save money without regretting it?
- Drop off yourself. A rabbit in a lined box travels easily, and it saves the collection fee.
- Keep the basic container. A rabbit's ashes fit in the tin they come in. You can choose an urn later, with a clear head. The urn sizing guide shows how small it can be.

Questions people ask
Why do two quotes for the same rabbit differ so much?
Usually because they include different things. One may bundle collection and a wooden urn; another quotes the bare cremation fee. Vet-arranged services also add a margin for handling. Ask both providers for an itemized total with the same service type, and the gap often narrows or at least becomes explainable.
Is there a cheaper price tier for very small pets?
Some crematoria have a pocket-pet or 'small animal' tier below their lightest dog and cat band, covering guinea pigs, hamsters, chinchillas and birds. Many don't, and simply charge their lowest weight band. It's always worth asking, especially for a guinea pig, hedgehog or chinchilla well under 2 kg.
Should I pay a deposit or pay in full upfront?
Most providers take payment when you book or when the ashes are returned; either is normal. Pay by card where possible, keep the receipt with the itemized breakdown, and make sure the invoice names the service type. If you're pre-paying months or years ahead, ask what happens if the business closes or you move.
Do vets add a fee on top of the crematorium's price?
Often, yes. The vet handles storage, paperwork and handover, and that's reflected in the price. It's a real service, but it isn't compulsory. You can ask the vet for the crematorium's name and contact them directly, or take your pet home and arrange aftercare yourself.
What's the cheapest way to handle a small pet's body?
Home burial in a garden you own is usually the cheapest, often costing nothing. Communal cremation is the lowest-cost cremation. If your pet was put to sleep, bury deep so wildlife can't reach the body, or choose cremation. In some places a council or city service will also collect pets for a small fee.
Do I have to decide on an urn when I book?
No. Nearly every provider returns ashes in a basic container that's perfectly fine to keep for weeks or months. Buying the urn later means you know exactly how much ash there is and can choose something that fits your home, rather than deciding in the first raw days.
