Plan the full cost of saying goodbye to a small pet
In one US study, 61%[1] of pet owners rated the cost of after-death care as a concern. For a rabbit or ferret the total is usually modest, but the extras add up. See it all in one place.

Using the planner
Tick what you want, adjust what you know
The planner lists the things families commonly pay for at the end of a pet's life: euthanasia, collection, cremation, an urn, jewelry, a garden stone, a paw print, a small service and a memorial tree. Each has a low and high amount already filled in, and private cremation and an urn start ticked. Untick anything you don't need, and type over any figure once you have a real quote.
The running total updates as you go, showing a low-to-high range. When you're done, you can print or copy the summary to keep, share with a partner or take to the vet.
Behind the numbers
Where the starting amounts come from
Where published figures exist, the planner uses them. Cremation comes from CareCredit's lightest US weight band, communal $45-75; private $100-175[2]. Euthanasia is harder, because few surveys cover exotic pets. The planner's two euthanasia lines start at CareCredit's US ranges for dogs, $110 to $253 at the clinic and $325 to $747 at home. The closest benchmark for a small pet is for cats, where CareCredit found clinic $158; home $359; cremation $180; burial $566[3] in the US. Exotic vets may charge differently, so treat those lines as placeholders.
Keepsakes and extras use typical ranges, labelled as such. Personalised urns, for instance, run USD 50–1,000+[4] by one industry report's figures, but a keepsake urn for a small pet usually sits near the bottom of that. A garden stone, a clay print kit or a small tree can each be a few dollars or a few hundred, depending on what you choose. Two of the smaller lines have figures of our own behind them: by our estimate, engraved pet garden stones start at about $39[5] at the median of three US sellers, and paw-print add-ons at US crematories have a median price of about $32[6].
A worked example
Budgeting for an elderly ferret
Picture a seven-year-old ferret with insulinoma. The Merck Veterinary Manual puts ferret lifespans at 6 to 10 years, so he's a senior. The family want a vet to visit at home so he isn't stressed by the car, a private cremation, a small urn and a clay print of his paw. They'll plant a flowering shrub in the garden, and skip the service and jewelry.
| Item | Low | High |
|---|---|---|
| Euthanasia at home (lowered toward the cat benchmark) | $300 | $450 |
| Private cremation | $100 | $175 |
| Urn (small keepsake size) | $25 | $100 |
| Paw print keepsake (clay) | $25 | $75 |
| Memorial tree or bio urn (flowering shrub) | $20 | $60 |
| Estimated total | $470 | $860 |
The biggest single line is the home visit. Swapping it for a clinic appointment would roughly halve that cost, and many ferrets travel calmly enough in a familiar carrier. The planner makes those trade-offs visible without deciding for you.

Who pays
Will insurance cover any of it?
Usually not much. Standard policies tend to cover euthanasia when it's medically necessary but not cremation or burial; Petplan's UK position, for example, is: Euthanasia covered; cremation/burial not covered[7]. A few US add-ons help: Lemonade's end-of-life add-on ($500 limit; $3.75/month[8]) reimbursed euthanasia, cremation and keepsakes. Exotic pet policies vary a lot, so check yours before relying on it.

Reading your total
Making the total fit your budget
If the total is higher than you'd like, the biggest savings for small pets are usually a clinic goodbye instead of a home visit, dropping your pet off yourself instead of collection, and communal cremation or a garden burial instead of private. Keepsakes like a fur clipping or a homemade print cost almost nothing and often mean the most. In the UK, the competition regulator's final report on vet services requires practices to offer a communal option and set out their cremation prices, which makes that swap easier to ask for.
Our cremation cost calculator prices the cremation line in more detail, and the aftercare options comparison shows how burial and cremation compare beyond cost. For ideas that cost little, see memorial ideas for small pets.
It can also help to set the budget before you're in the vet's consulting room. Knowing you've decided on, say, a clinic goodbye and a private cremation with a simple tin makes it easier to say no kindly to extras you don't need. If your pet is still with you, the pet age calculator and our pre-planning guide can help you decide when to have that conversation.
Know the limits
What the planner can't do for you
It can't know local prices, whether your vet adds a handling fee, or whether an exotic-pet vet in your area does home visits at all. It also can't tell you what's worth it; that's personal, and there's no wrong answer. Our guide to comparing written quotes helps you fill in real numbers, and we're happy to find them for you if you send us your pet's details.

Questions people ask
How much does it cost to put a rabbit to sleep?
It varies with the vet and whether it's done at the clinic or at home. Few surveys cover rabbits specifically; the closest US benchmark is for cats, where clinic euthanasia averages about $158 and home visits about $359. Exotic-pet vets may charge more or less, so ask your practice directly.
What's the cheapest respectful option for a small pet?
Home burial in a garden you own is close to free and can be a lovely goodbye, especially for a pet who died naturally. If burial isn't possible, communal cremation is the lowest-cost cremation option. Adding a homemade print or fur clipping keeps a memento for almost nothing.
Should I include a memorial service in the budget?
Only if it matters to your family. For small pets, a service is usually informal: a few words in the garden, a candle, a drawing from a child. That costs nothing. Some families do hold a gathering; the planner's Farewell or service line starts at $0 to $300, so you can include it if you want to.
Can I save or print my budget?
Yes. The planner lets you print or copy the summary so you can keep it, share it with a partner or bring it to a vet appointment. Nothing you enter is sent to us, so if you want real prices, fill in the request form separately.
Do I have to pay for everything at once?
Not always. Euthanasia is usually paid at the vet on the day, while the cremation provider may invoice separately or bill through the vet. Urns, jewelry and garden memorials can wait weeks or months. Spreading those later purchases out is common, and often easier emotionally too.
