Brentwood, California
How Brentwood families say goodbye to small pets
Brentwood's summers rank among the hottest in the Bay Area, with July highs around 93F and plenty of days above 100F, while December nights fall to about 40F. After a pet dies during a heat wave, shut the blinds, cool one room hard with the air conditioning and keep your pet there. In winter, delta fog may delay a driver coming out Highway 4, but you will have time.
Brentwood has grown from a farm town into a sprawling East Contra Costa suburb: newer subdivisions and large active-adult communities sit alongside the old downtown, and farmhouses still line rural roads through the orchards. Some newer developments are gated and have a guard or call box. Let a provider know how to get through, or whether they should head down a farm lane marked only by a mailbox.
If you keep several rabbits, guinea pigs or chinchillas, perhaps for showing or breeding, you may lose a few animals over the years. Ask the crematorium serving Brentwood whether it offers a standing arrangement for small animals: communal cremation for some, private for the ones you'd like to keep. Clear labeling matters when more than one animal travels at a time.
With roughly 66,607 residents, Brentwood is the 125th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Stockton, roughly 22 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Brentwood run from there.
Brentwood sits within easy reach of Oakley (5 miles), Discovery Bay (5 miles) and Antioch (8 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Brentwood; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

Cremation habits in California and your small pet
About 70.5%[1] of people in California are cremated, so cremation is familiar, but it's still worth reading a price list closely. The terms individual, private and partitioned mean different things at different providers. For a rabbit or ferret, ask whether your pet will be alone in the chamber, or in a separate section alongside others. Both are sold as ashes-returned services, but only one is genuinely individual.
We take the California rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Brentwood, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Heat, cold and timing in Brentwood
Hot months in Brentwood also bring flies, and flystrike is the single most common recorded cause of death in English pet rabbits, at 10.9%[5] in one study. After a death in warm weather, cover the body and bring it indoors promptly. For the surviving rabbits, check their rear ends every day through June, July, August and September; older or overweight rabbits that can't clean themselves are most at risk.
In June, July, August and September, a small body warms up quickly once it's out of the shade. If your rabbit or guinea pig dies in Brentwood's heat and collection isn't immediate, place them in a sealed bag inside a box and keep it in the fridge or a cooler with wrapped ice packs. That can feel stark, but it's exactly what vets and crematoria suggest, and it keeps your pet peaceful for a day or two.

Small pet cremation prices for Brentwood
Local price levels matter too. Bank of America card data show pet care spending running well above the US average in Seattle and San Francisco, and below it in San Antonio, St Louis and Atlanta[6]. Expect Brentwood quotes to follow the local cost of living. If burial away from home appeals, the median whole-body burial for a small pet across five US cemetery lists was about $350[7], by our estimate.

Burial, ashes and paperwork in California
Burying a small pet on land you don't own is where most families run into trouble. Shared gardens, allotments, community gardens, parks and a relative's yard all need the owner's permission, and many public spaces in California don't allow burial at all. If there's any doubt, cremate and keep the ashes, then bury them later somewhere that's genuinely yours, or somewhere the owner has happily agreed.

What to do when your rabbit or guinea pig dies in Brentwood
- Tell the children simply and honestly. Use the word died rather than gone to sleep, which can frighten younger children.
- Let them see and stroke their pet if they'd like, with the body tucked into a fleece or well-loved blanket.
- Give them a job: lining the box, drawing something, or picking a toy or handful of hay to send along with their pet.
- Keep your pet cool in a lidded box in the coldest room you have until you've all agreed what to do.
- Choose a goodbye the children can take part in. That might be burying their pet in the garden, or a little ceremony once a Brentwood provider has returned the ashes.
- Keep an eye on the bonded survivor too. Checking that they're eating is a good job to share with the children.
Keeping a small companion close
Brentwood is known for its U-pick cherry orchards and summer sweet corn stands, and many families here have ties to the farms that ring the town. Companion animals often shared long summer evenings in backyards looking west to Mount Diablo. Those quiet evenings, and the rhythm of harvest seasons, often find their way into how families here remember a companion.

Questions people ask
Does the Brentwood climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 93°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Brentwood?
The closest communities we cover are Oakley (about 5 miles), Discovery Bay (about 5 miles) and Antioch (about 8 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Brentwood too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is cremation common in California?
For people, yes: about 70.5%[1] of California deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Brentwood follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Will I have to travel to Stockton to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Stockton (roughly 22 miles from Brentwood) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How long does it take to get small pet ashes back in Brentwood?
Many families receive private cremation ashes in about 5-10 days[9], sometimes sooner if you drop your pet off yourself. Where the crematorium collects from vets only once or twice a week, it can take longer. Ask for an expected date when you book, and whether you can collect in person rather than waiting for the vet's next delivery.
How do I keep my other rabbits safe in a Brentwood heatwave?
Move hutches into deep shade or bring rabbits indoors to the coolest room. Frozen water bottles wrapped in a towel, a ceramic tile to lie on and lightly dampened ears all help. Avoid handling during the hottest hours. Chinchillas need even more care: keep them in a room below the mid 70s°F. Watch for panting, drooling or floppiness and call a vet at once if you see them.
