Why the California cremation rate matters here
Cremation is routine for people in California, at about 70.5%[1], and that familiarity sometimes pushes families toward private cremation without much thought. Communal cremation is a perfectly caring choice for a small pet, especially if you'd have scattered the ashes anyway or already have a garden memorial for earlier pets. The one thing to settle before you choose is whether you'd like anything back.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the California figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in San Jose tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Timing a small pet's aftercare around San Jose's seasons

What California allows for small pets
Rules in California treat a rabbit or ferret like any other pet, which in practice means burial on land you own is usually fine and cremation is always allowed. The extra care small pets need is practical rather than legal: bury deep enough to stop foxes and dogs digging, keep away from vegetable beds, and never put a pet that was euthanized in a shallow grave.
San Jose's own guidance is published by City of San José Animal Care Services; it covers public collection, which is separate from arranging a private cremation. Not sure which office covers San Jose? The California local government directory is the official list.

The first day, step by step
- Tell the children simply and honestly. Use the word died rather than gone to sleep, which can frighten younger children.
- Let them see and stroke their pet if they'd like, with the body tucked into a fleece or well-loved blanket.
- Give them a job: lining the box, drawing something, or picking a toy or handful of hay to send along with their pet.
- Keep your pet cool in a lidded box in the coldest room you have until you've all agreed what to do.

Does the San Jose climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 79°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Do chinchillas need anything different at the end?
Chinchillas are sensitive to heat, stress and handling, so a calm, cool room matters. A vet experienced with chinchillas may suggest sedation before euthanasia. Afterwards, because a chinchilla usually weighs well under a kilo, a private cremation returns only a tablespoon or two of ash. Their dense fur makes a lovely keepsake clipping if it's taken before cremation.
What should I carry my small pet's body in?
A shoebox, small carrier or sturdy cardboard box works well. Line it with a towel and some of your pet's bedding or hay, and close the lid. In warm weather, put your pet in a sealed bag first. Label the box with your name and your pet's name. A plastic trash bag on its own upsets most people, and a lined box is gentler for everyone.
Will I actually get ashes back from my guinea pig?
Yes, from a genuine private cremation. Ash is mostly processed bone, and a median-weight guinea pig returns about 37 g[8] by our estimate, a couple of tablespoons. A rabbit returns more, around 74 g[9]. Ask the provider how they keep very small pets separate, because the real risk isn't losing everything but mixing with other remains.
