How Burbank families say goodbye to small pets
The Verdugo Mountains rise right behind Burbank's northern neighbourhoods, with trails up Stough Canyon and Wildwood Canyon, and Griffith Park lies just across the river. These are places many Burbank families connect with time spent outdoors with their pets. City and county parkland has rules about scattering, so check with the park authority first, or keep the ashes at home until you decide.
Burbank packs a lot into a small city: studio lots and offices along the Media District, apartments near downtown and the airport, and blocks of 1940s bungalows running up toward the Verdugo foothills. Many residents keep unpredictable hours on shoots or late edits, so a pet may die when nobody expected to be home. When you call, ask whether a provider can come late in the day or early in the morning to fit around your schedule.
Some Burbank families only realize their rabbit was unwell after the fact: a quiet evening, no droppings, a pet found stretched out in the hutch next morning. If the death was sudden and you keep other rabbits, call your vet before burying. Rabbit hemorrhagic disease can travel on bedding, shoes and hands, and your vet will know whether it has turned up in the area recently.
With roughly 102,988 residents, Burbank is the 67th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Los Angeles, roughly 11 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Burbank run from there.
Families in Burbank often end up using a provider from Glendale (5 miles), La Cañada Flintridge (7 miles) and West Hollywood (7 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

What the local cremation rate tells you
Pet crematoria tend to be plentiful in California, where roughly 70.5%[1] of people are cremated, and that usually means shorter waits. Some will cremate a rabbit or guinea pig within a day or two of drop-off and let you collect the ashes that same week. If timing matters to you, perhaps because a child is leaving for camp or a relative is visiting, ask for an expected return date before you choose.
That California rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Burbank only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Heat, cold and timing in Burbank
Heat matters for garden burial too. Sun-baked ground in Burbank can be hard to dig deeply in August, and a shallow grave is exactly what foxes, coyotes and dogs find. If the soil is like concrete, soak it the evening before, or choose cremation and bury the ashes later when the weather cools. Ashes come to no harm on a shelf in the meantime.
If a long weekend or holiday means no crematorium in Burbank can take your pet for several days during July, August and September, a freezer is the kindest place for a small body. Seal your pet in a freezer bag, set it in a small box and freeze it. Tell the crematorium when you drop your pet off; there's no need to defrost first, and it makes no difference to a private cremation.

Where the money goes: small pet aftercare in Burbank
Rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets and chinchillas sit in the lightest band on nearly every US price list. CareCredit lists pets up to 30 lb at $45 to $75 for communal cremation and $100 to $175 for private[5], and small mammals tend to fall at the lower end. Burbank prices will land somewhere around there, higher if you add home collection, an after-hours visit or a carved wooden urn.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for California: California costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Garden burial, disease and the rules in California
Most decisions after a small pet dies are yours alone. Where California and your local council, city or county may have a say is burial: depth, distance from wells and streams, and whether renters can bury at all. Landlords and homeowners' associations can add their own conditions, so check your lease or HOA guidelines too.

The California page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Burbank's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
The first day, step by step
- Note your pet's weight where you have it. Chinchillas, ferrets, guinea pigs and rabbits are all charged at the lowest weight band, but a figure makes quoting easier.
- Ring two providers covering Burbank, your vet's crematorium plus an independent one, and ask how they treat a pet this small.
- Decide who travels. A rabbit or guinea pig fits in the car easily, and taking them yourself usually means no collection charge.
- Pack the box carefully: line it with a towel and some bedding, use a sealed bag in warm weather, and tape a label to the top giving your name and your pet's.
- Ask what can go with your pet, such as a hay ball, a ferret's favorite sock or a letter. Some items have to be removed first.
- Agree the total in writing, with the container included and a date for collecting the ashes.
- Plan for the ashes: a little urn, scattering them, or burying them beneath a shrub.
Keepsakes and memorials for small pets
August in Burbank regularly climbs into the high 80s and beyond, and the valley can stay warm after dark, while autumn Santa Ana winds bring dry heat and fire warnings to the Verdugos. After a death in hot weather, keep your pet's body indoors with the air conditioning running, set frozen packs wrapped in cloth along it, and ask for pickup that day. December nights can dip into the low 40s, which buys a bit more time.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Burbank?
The closest communities we cover are Glendale (about 5 miles), La Cañada Flintridge (about 7 miles) and West Hollywood (about 7 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Burbank too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Will I have to travel to Los Angeles to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Los Angeles (roughly 11 miles from Burbank) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How do California attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the California human cremation rate at about 70.5%[1]. We show it on the Burbank page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Does the Burbank climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 88°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
My pet was put to sleep. Can I still bury them at home?
You can in most places, but the grave needs to be deep. The drug used for euthanasia stays in the body and can poison foxes, dogs, cats or birds of prey that dig it up. Dig well down, lay a paving slab on top, and keep away from ponds and streams. If that isn't practical, cremation is the safer choice.
Should I pick a crematorium for my elderly rabbit in advance?
It helps. Once a rabbit passes about eight, or a guinea pig about five, a short call to your vet about aftercare is a kind thing to do for your future self. Find out who handles their cremations, the price of an individual one and if a vet could come to the house. You won't be tempting fate, and on the day you won't need to make phone calls.
