Dixon, California
What small pet aftercare in Dixon looks like
Many Dixon families have room in the yard, and burying a companion animal at home is common on larger lots. Keep the grave well away from wells and irrigation lines, and dig far enough down that coyotes and neighbors' animals cannot disturb it. Renters, and anyone planning to relocate, may prefer cremation, which lets the ashes travel, and some people later scatter part of them on family farmland.
Dixon is a farm town on Interstate 80 in Solano County, between Vacaville and Davis and about 20 miles from Sacramento. Neighborhoods of ranch houses and newer subdivisions give way quickly to tomato, alfalfa and orchard land, and plenty of residents commute along the freeway. When you ask for aftercare, mention whether you are in town or on a rural road outside it, since pickup times and fees depend on that.
Home-visit vets are thin on the ground near Dixon, so many small-pet euthanasias happen at the clinic. You can still make it gentle. Bring your pet in their usual carrier with a handful of hay, bring the bonded partner if it's calm enough to travel, and ask for the first or last appointment of the day, when the waiting room is quiet and nobody is rushed.
Dixon is home to about 21,116 people, the 258th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Dixon are based about 20 miles away in Sacramento, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Families in Dixon often end up using a provider from Davis (8 miles, a larger centre), Vacaville (11 miles, a larger centre) and Woodland (16 miles, a larger centre). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

6 million[2]
About 6 million US households keep small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.
4.3 years[3]
Pet rabbits in England have a median age at death of 4.3 years.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

What the local cremation rate tells you
About 70.5%[1] of people in California are cremated, so cremation feels ordinary here, and that carries over to pets. Families rarely feel they need to explain why they want a rabbit's ashes home. Crematoria are well established and used to small animals. Where cremation is this familiar, the useful question isn't whether to cremate but how: private or communal, and how your provider keeps a pet weighing a pound or two apart from much larger animals.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the California figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Dixon tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Seasons and small-pet aftercare in Dixon
Hot months in Dixon also bring flies, and flystrike is the single most common recorded cause of death in English pet rabbits, at 10.9%[5] in one study. After a death in warm weather, cover the body and bring it indoors promptly. For the surviving rabbits, check their rear ends every day through June, July, August and September; older or overweight rabbits that can't clean themselves are most at risk.
Heat matters for garden burial too. Sun-baked ground in Dixon can be hard to dig deeply in July, and a shallow grave is exactly what foxes, coyotes and dogs find. If the soil is like concrete, soak it the evening before, or choose cremation and bury the ashes later when the weather cools. Ashes come to no harm on a shelf in the meantime.

Pricing a private cremation for a pocket pet in Dixon
With a small pet, you're paying mostly for careful handling rather than chamber time. A median 2 kg rabbit returns about 74 g[6] of ash and a guinea pig about 37 g[7], by our estimate, so the urn can be tiny and inexpensive. In Dixon, the biggest swing in price usually comes from collection: dropping your pet off yourself is often free, while a home visit can cost as much as the cremation.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for California: California costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Garden burial, disease and the rules in California
Burying a small pet on land you don't own is where most families run into trouble. Shared gardens, allotments, community gardens, parks and a relative's yard all need the owner's permission, and many public spaces in California don't allow burial at all. If there's any doubt, cremate and keep the ashes, then bury them later somewhere that's genuinely yours, or somewhere the owner has happily agreed.

The California page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Dixon's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
The first day, step by step
- Ask your pet sitter to call you first, before they move anything, if your pet dies while you're away from Dixon.
- Talk them through the basics by phone: a towel around your pet, a closed box and the coolest room in the house.
- Ask your vet to hold your pet in their cold room until you're home. Most will do this for a few days without fuss.
- Make sure the survivor is being watched, particularly for appetite and droppings, and leave the sitter with the vet's phone number.
- Decide on aftercare when you're back and able to think. There's no need to choose from a hotel room.
- Say goodbye at the clinic if that would help, ahead of the burial or cremation taking place.
Keepsakes and memorials for small pets
Dixon summers are hot, with July highs around 95F, and a north wind can blow dry across the fields for days. Winters bring cool, damp mornings and occasional valley fog. On a hot day, lower the body's temperature as quickly as you can: an air-conditioned room, frozen water bottles wrapped in towels, and a sheet over the top. Don't leave a body in a garage or car while you wait.

Questions people ask
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Dixon?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 95°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Dixon?
Usually yes. Davis is about 8 miles away, Vacaville is about 11 miles away and Woodland is about 16 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Dixon page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 70.5%[1] of California residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Where are the providers that serve Dixon actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Sacramento, about 20 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Dixon and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Should I pick a crematorium for my elderly rabbit in advance?
It helps. Once a rabbit passes about eight, or a guinea pig about five, a short call to your vet about aftercare is a kind thing to do for your future self. Find out who handles their cremations, the price of an individual one and if a vet could come to the house. You won't be tempting fate, and on the day you won't need to make phone calls.
What should I do if my rabbit dies in the Dixon heat?
Bring your rabbit indoors straight away, out of the sun. Wrap them loosely in a towel, place them in a sealed bag inside a box and keep it in the fridge, a cooler with wrapped ice packs or the coolest air-conditioned room. Then check the survivors, because rabbits and chinchillas overheat quickly: give them shade, frozen water bottles to lie against and fresh water.
