Dublin has grown quickly, and much of the city is recent: apartment and condo complexes around the BART stations, and large subdivisions stretching east toward Livermore, while West Dublin's older streets sit against the hills. In a big complex, the building number, your unit, the location of visitor parking and whether there is an elevator are the details that help most. Some complexes also ask that the leasing office be told.
Dublin shares the Tri-Valley's warm summers, around 89F in July, and chilly winter nights that can dip below 40F. On a hot evening, a bedroom with the air conditioning on and the shades drawn is a good place for your pet to rest until collection. In winter there is usually more time, and many families use it to let children and relatives come by and say goodbye.
Rabbits and cavies are popular youth livestock projects around towns like Dublin, and a child who shows animals may lose one mid-season. Treat it as a real loss even if the animal was kept partly for showing. Many families bury a show rabbit at home, others choose private cremation so the child can keep a small tin. Burial or cremation: the local habit
Around 70.5%[1] of people who die in California are cremated. Where cremation is this normal, pet crematoria tend to compete, and some list a separate price for pocket pets rather than charging the same as for a cat. It's worth asking for that price by name. The difference is rarely large, but it tells you the provider handles rabbits and guinea pigs often enough to have thought about them properly.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the California figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Dublin tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Cool, covered and safe: Dublin weather notes
In July, August and September, a small body warms up quickly once it's out of the shade. If your rabbit or guinea pig dies in Dublin's heat and collection isn't immediate, place them in a sealed bag inside a box and keep it in the fridge or a cooler with wrapped ice packs. That can feel stark, but it's exactly what vets and crematoria suggest, and it keeps your pet peaceful for a day or two.
If a long weekend or holiday means no crematorium in Dublin can take your pet for several days during July, August and September, a freezer is the kindest place for a small body. Seal your pet in a freezer bag, set it in a small box and freeze it. Local rules worth knowing in California
If your pet was put to sleep, the drug used stays in the body. Since 2003, US labels for euthanasia drugs have carried a warning that euthanized animals must be disposed of so that scavenging wildlife can't eat them[8]. That's why vets in California and elsewhere often suggest cremation after euthanasia, or a well-protected grave with a heavy slab over it.
California keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Dublin.
Start with the California rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Dublin's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
A checklist for Dublin small-pet owners
- Tell the children simply and honestly. Use the word died rather than gone to sleep, which can frighten younger children.
- Let them see and stroke their pet if they want to, wrapped in a favorite blanket or fleece.
- Give them a job: lining the box, drawing something, or picking a toy or handful of hay to send along with their pet.
- Keep your pet cool in a lidded box in the coldest room you have until you've all agreed what to do.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Fremont to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Fremont (roughly 11 miles from Dublin) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Dublin?
Usually yes. Pleasanton is about 4 miles away, San Ramon is about 6 miles away and Hayward is about 8 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Dublin page quote a human cremation rate?

There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Does the Dublin climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 89°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
How long does it take to get small pet ashes back in Dublin?
Many families receive private cremation ashes in about 5-10 days[9], sometimes sooner if you drop your pet off yourself. Where the crematorium collects from vets only once or twice a week, it can take longer. Ask for an expected date when you book, and whether you can collect in person rather than waiting for the vet's next delivery.
Can pet hedgehogs be cremated near Dublin?
Yes. African pygmy hedgehogs are cremated like other small mammals, usually in the lowest price band. Adults often weigh just 300 to 600 grams[10], so a private cremation returns about a tablespoon of ash. Many hedgehogs die after an illness such as a tumor or wobbly hedgehog syndrome, so it helps to decide on aftercare with your vet before the final appointment.
