Caring for a small pet's body in Hillsborough
Many Hillsborough pets had big gardens to roam under old oaks, and deer drifting across the lawn were part of their world. Those familiar corners often become the heart of a memorial, from a flat stone set in a border to an urn in the room they favored. The open country just west of town around Crystal Springs is protected watershed with limited public access, so a private garden is the simpler place for scattering.
The Peninsula climate here is gentle: September is usually the warmest month, averaging around 75F, and January lows settle near 45F. That buys a family some time before collection compared with the hot inland valleys. On a sunny autumn afternoon, though, a pet who has died should still go to the shadiest room, laid on a blanket and kept beside a fan, with a same-day pickup booked if you can manage it.
Wild rabbits are rarely far away in and around Hillsborough, and neither are predators. That affects both health and burial. A pet rabbit that dies suddenly may have picked up a virus from wild rabbits through grass, hay or insects, and a buried body can be dug up by foxes within days. Talk to your vet before burying if the death was unexplained, and bury deep either way.
About 11,206 people live in Hillsborough, which makes it the 284th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. San Francisco, roughly 14 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Hillsborough run from there.
Families in Hillsborough often end up using a provider from Burlingame (2 miles, a larger centre), Millbrae (2 miles, a larger centre) and San Mateo (3 miles, a larger centre). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

Cremation habits in California and your small pet
In California, about 70.5%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates anywhere. That familiarity shows in the questions small-pet owners ask: less about whether, more about whether they'll really get ashes back from something so tiny. They will, from a genuine private cremation. A rabbit returns a few tablespoons of bone ash, enough for a keepsake urn or to share a pinch between two children.
The California percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Hillsborough, not as a count of pets.
Hillsborough weather and your small pet
Spells of heavy rain are the main weather worry for a garden grave in mild places like Hillsborough. Waterlogged ground is unpleasant to dig and can wash soil away from a shallow spot. If the garden is soaked, wait a few dry days, pick the highest, best-drained corner, or cremate first. A small pet kept cool and covered indoors comes to no harm while you wait.
Hillsborough rarely forces a rushed decision. That's useful, because small-pet aftercare often involves several people: children who want to say goodbye, a partner at work, a bonded rabbit who needs time with the body. Take the time. Most crematoria are happy to receive a small pet the following day, and a vet can hold them in a cold room if that's easier.

Where the money goes: small pet aftercare in Hillsborough
Rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets and chinchillas sit in the lightest band on nearly every US price list. CareCredit lists pets up to 30 lb at $45 to $75 for communal cremation and $100 to $175 for private[5], and small mammals tend to fall at the lower end. Hillsborough prices will land somewhere around there, higher if you add home collection, an after-hours visit or a carved wooden urn.

Local rules worth knowing in California
Scattering rules rarely cause problems with a small pet, because a rabbit or guinea pig produces so little, rarely more than a small cupful and often much less. Private land with permission is fine almost everywhere. Parks, beaches and nature reserves in California may have their own rules, so check before you go. Many families end up burying the ashes instead, which avoids the question and gives them a fixed place to visit.
The official California local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Hillsborough.
For California's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the California guide. Local rules in Hillsborough can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
Step by step in Hillsborough
- Ask your pet sitter to call you first, and not to touch anything until they have, should your pet die while you're out of Hillsborough.
- Talk them through the basics by phone: a towel around your pet, a closed box and the coolest room in the house.
- Ask your vet to hold your pet in their cold room until you're home. Most will do this for a few days without fuss.
- Make sure the survivor is being watched for eating and droppings, and give the sitter your vet's number.
- Decide on aftercare when you're back and able to think. There's no need to choose from a hotel room.
- Say goodbye at the clinic if that would help, ahead of the burial or cremation taking place.
Ways Hillsborough families remember rabbits and guinea pigs
Hillsborough is a residential town of about 11,000 in San Mateo County, set in the hills above Burlingame and San Mateo with no shops or business district of its own. Houses sit on large, often wooded lots along curving roads without sidewalks, and some are reached by gated or shared private drives. For a home pickup, share the gate code, where a vehicle can park, and whether the house is set well back from the street, since a carry across a long lawn changes what the driver brings.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Hillsborough actually based?
Some are local, and some run from San Francisco, about 14 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Hillsborough and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Does the Hillsborough climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In September, with highs near 75°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Hillsborough?
Usually yes. Burlingame is about 2 miles away, Millbrae is about 2 miles away and San Mateo is about 3 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Hillsborough page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 70.5%[1] of California residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
What is RHDV2 and why does it matter for rabbit aftercare?
Rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus type 2 kills 50-100%[7] of infected rabbits, often with no warning signs. It was first found in a US pet rabbit in 2018 and has since spread to wild rabbits across much of the West. The USDA asks owners to speak to a vet or animal health officials before disposing of a rabbit's body[8], because the virus survives in soil and on bedding.
My rabbit was only four. Is that young?
Sadly, not unusually. UK vet records put the median age at death at 4.3 years[3] for pet rabbits and 4.03 years[9] for guinea pigs, even though well-kept individuals can reach eight or more. Dental disease and flystrike claim many rabbits early. If your pet died younger than you hoped, it's rarely because you did something wrong.
