Burial or cremation: the local habit
About 70.5%[1] of people in California are cremated, so cremation feels ordinary here, and that carries over to pets. Families rarely feel they need to explain why they want a rabbit's ashes home. Crematoria are well established and used to small animals. For small mammals, the rules worth knowing in California cover three things: burying on your own property, scattering ashes, and what to do if a rabbit may have died of a disease such as RHDV2. The first two are straightforward. The third is a good reason to call your vet before a garden burial whenever a rabbit dies without warning.

Their dense fur makes a lovely keepsake clipping if it's taken before cremation.
What is RHDV2 and why does it matter for rabbit aftercare?
Rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus type 2 kills 50-100%[7] of infected rabbits, often with no warning signs. It was first found in a US pet rabbit in 2018 and has since spread to wild rabbits across much of the West. The USDA asks owners to speak to a vet or animal health officials before disposing of a rabbit's body[8], because the virus survives in soil and on bedding.
