Santa Monica, California
What small pet aftercare in Santa Monica looks like
Santa Monica's ocean breeze keeps the climate mild all year, with August highs around 79F and February lows near 51F, and the marine layer often keeps early summer gray and cool. That gives you slightly more time than inland, but a pet's body should still be kept cool: wrap it in a towel, add ice packs and keep it in a shaded room. On rare heat-wave days, act more quickly.
The beach, the palisades above the ocean and the city's many parks are part of how Santa Monica residents live with their pets. The fires in the neighboring Pacific Palisades in early 2025 also touched many local families, and some lost pets or homes. Whatever your situation, private cremation with the ashes returned gives you time to decide on a memorial, whether at home or somewhere by the sea.
If the nearest crematorium is some distance from Santa Monica, ask how the ashes will come back. Many regional providers return them through your vet on the next delivery round, and some will send them by tracked post or courier in a padded box. A small pet's ashes weigh only a few ounces, so posting them is easy. Ask for a tracking number and a delivery date before agreeing.
About 90,082 people live in Santa Monica, which makes it the 84th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Los Angeles, roughly 14 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Santa Monica run from there.
If you want to compare providers, look at Culver City (5 miles), Beverly Hills (6 miles) and West Hollywood (8 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
70.5%[1]
The NFDA projected California's cremation rate at 70.5% for 2024.
6 million[2]
About 6 million US households keep small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.
4.3 years[3]
Pet rabbits in England have a median age at death of 4.3 years.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
If a number here surprises you, the primary material is American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 National Pet Owners Survey release and O'Neill et al. 2020, Veterinary Record; we only apply it to this.

Local funeral customs and a very small pet
Cremation is routine for people in California, at about 70.5%[1], and that familiarity sometimes pushes families toward private cremation without much thought. Communal cremation is a perfectly caring choice for a small pet, especially if you'd have scattered the ashes anyway or already have a garden memorial for earlier pets. The one thing to settle before you choose is whether you'd like anything back.
We take the California rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Santa Monica, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Keeping a small body cool in Santa Monica's climate
A mild climate means flies are around for more of the year, and flystrike tops the list of recorded causes of death in English pet rabbits (10.9%[5] of deaths in one large study). Warm, damp spells are when it strikes. After a death, cover your pet and bring them inside promptly, and check any surviving rabbits' back ends daily for the next few weeks.
Even in a mild place, rabbits and chinchillas feel warm spells more than people do. Chinchillas in particular struggle once a room gets past the mid 70s, and August in Santa Monica averages highs of about 79°F. If an elderly small pet is failing during a warm week, keep them somewhere shaded and airy, and if they die, move the body somewhere cool without delay.

Pricing a private cremation for a pocket pet in Santa Monica
If you'd rather bury than cremate but don't have a yard, a pet cemetery is the other route. One pet insurer's published US prices for a plot for pets under 30 lb start at about $400 to $600[6], several times the cost of a private cremation. For most Santa Monica small-pet owners, the realistic choice is between a garden grave, which costs almost nothing, a communal cremation and a private one.

Burial, ashes and paperwork in California
Small-pet burial rules tend to be lighter than those for larger animals. England's groundwater guidance, for example, sets no minimum requirements for small pets buried on your own land; its stricter limits are for larger animals. Rules in California may differ, so check locally, but for a rabbit or guinea pig the real questions are usually ownership of the land and keeping scavengers out.
The official California local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Santa Monica.
The California page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Santa Monica's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
Your first few hours, in order
- Book the appointment for a calm time of day, ideally with a vet who sees rabbits, guinea pigs or ferrets. Ask whether a home visit is possible.
- Decide on aftercare beforehand, so you can simply ask the vet to take your pet afterwards, or bring a lined box to take them home.
- Bring the bonded companion along where that's realistic; otherwise, arrange for them to spend time with the body once you're back.
- Ask for a paw or foot print while you're there. Plenty of practices are happy to do this.
- Confirm private or communal on paper, and find out the date you can expect to pick up the ashes.
- If you plan a garden burial after euthanasia, go deep and cover the spot with a paving slab. The euthanasia drug remains in your pet's body and could harm any wildlife that digs there.
Keeping a small companion close
Santa Monica is a dense beach city on the western edge of Los Angeles County, about 14 miles from downtown LA, and most residents rent apartments rather than own houses. Parking is tight, many buildings have shared garages or no elevator, and traffic can be slow. When you ask for pet aftercare, give your building details, floor, elevator access and parking, so a collection can be arranged around the realities of your street.
The services page is the place to compare what is included, the planning tools turn your pet's details into figures, or see how other readers answered in our polls, look through our guides and the blog. If you live between Santa Monica and Fresno, San Francisco, San Diego and Los Angeles, either page applies. Every other community in California, and all of the United States, is listed too.

Questions people ask
Why does the Santa Monica page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 70.5%[1] of California residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will I have to travel to Los Angeles to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Los Angeles (roughly 14 miles from Santa Monica) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Does the Santa Monica climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 79°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Santa Monica?
Usually yes. Culver City is about 5 miles away, Beverly Hills is about 6 miles away and West Hollywood is about 8 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Should I pick a crematorium for my elderly rabbit in advance?
It helps. Once a rabbit passes about eight, or a guinea pig about five, a short call to your vet about aftercare is a kind thing to do for your future self. Find out who handles their cremations, the price of an individual one and if a vet could come to the house. You won't be tempting fate, and on the day you won't need to make phone calls.
Is private cremation worth it for a guinea pig?
It is if you want the ashes back to keep, scatter or bury later, particularly if you might move house. If a garden grave or communal cremation feels right, there's no need to pay more. A guinea pig's size doesn't make either choice less meaningful; what matters is what you'll be glad of a year from now.
