How much does it cost to cremate a guinea pig?
In the US, communal guinea pig cremation usually costs about $45 to $75 and private cremation about $100 to $175, sometimes less where there's a pocket-pet rate. A median guinea pig returns only about 37 g[1] of ashes, so a small keepsake urn is usually plenty.

The answer
What's the typical price to cremate a guinea pig?
Expect roughly $45 to $75 for communal cremation (no ashes back) and $100 to $175 for private cremation (your guinea pig's own ashes returned) in the US. Those are the national figures for the lightest weight band, pets up to 30 lb[2], and a guinea pig sits right at the bottom of it. Some crematoria have a pocket-pet rate below that band, so it's worth asking.
Extras are where the total grows. Home collection, a decorative urn, a clay print and express return can each add more than the cremation itself costs. For an animal that weighs about a kilogram, it's easy to end up paying mostly for the add-ons.

What does a full guinea pig aftercare bill look like?
Here are two realistic US totals for the same guinea pig, one kept simple and one with the common extras. They're illustrations built from published ranges, not quotes.
| Item | Simple private cremation | With common extras |
|---|---|---|
| Private cremation | $100 | $150 |
| Collection | $0 (you drop off) | $50 |
| Container | Basic tin, included | Keepsake urn, about $28 |
| Paw print | Home clay, about $5 | Provider's clay print, about $10 to $35 |
| Engraving | None | About $15 to $25 |
| Approximate total | About $105 | About $255 to $290 |
Keepsake urns sized for a small pet typically cost $15–$60[3], and a single keepsake urn averages about $28[4]. Name-only engraving usually adds $15–$25[5]. The memorial budget planner lets you set each line to what you actually want and see the total.

Outside the US
How much is guinea pig cremation in the UK and elsewhere?
Britain has around 700,000[6] pet guinea pigs, according to UK Pet Food, and UK prices run from about GBP 50 to GBP 300+[7] across all pets, with a guinea pig's communal cremation at the bottom end. Individual cremation through a vet costs noticeably more than communal: the UK competition regulator found communal cremation was 2x to 5x cheaper[8] than individual for the same weight.
- Ireland: one crematorium lists individual cremation from €150 for pets under 2 kg[9].
- Australia: the median listed individual price for pets up to 5 kg is AUD 412[10], and communal starts from about AUD 80[11].
- Japan: a Tokyo pet memorial park charges ¥14,300 communal and ¥22,000 individual for pets under 5 kg[12].
- New Zealand: one Auckland provider lists NZD 55 communal and NZD 305 individual for its 2 to 7 kg band[13].

Choosing
Is private cremation worth it for a guinea pig?
Only if you want the ashes. Many families say goodbye at home with the children, then choose communal cremation or a garden grave, and feel entirely at peace with it. Private cremation earns its price when you want to keep, scatter or bury the ashes somewhere meaningful later, or when you rent and can't bury in the garden.

If you're weighing it up, our explainer on private vs communal cremation covers why separation matters more for tiny bodies, and the aftercare options comparison scores each route against what matters to you.

What does it cost when two guinea pigs die close together?
Guinea pigs are social and often bought together, so they tend to reach old age together too. UK vet records put their median age at death at 4.03 years[14]. When a second one dies within days or weeks, you have a few choices, each priced differently.
- Two private cremations: full price twice, but each set of ashes is kept separate. You can still combine them in one urn afterwards.
- One joint cremation: if both have died, some providers will cremate them together at or near a single private price. Ashes are mixed.
- Combine later: keep the first guinea pig's ashes and ask for the second's to be added to the same urn when the time comes.
Joint cremation must be requested in writing, because a provider's default is always to keep animals apart. While the survivor is still with you, keep a close eye on their eating; our guide to bonded-pair survivor care explains what to watch for.
Keeping costs down
What are the cheaper alternatives to cremation?
Garden burial is usually free if you own the garden. A guinea pig needs only a small grave, but dig deep enough that foxes and dogs won't disturb it, and deeper still if they were put to sleep, because the euthanasia drug stays in the body. The FDA has required warning labels on those drugs since 2003[15].
Pet cemetery burial is the most expensive route: by our estimate across five US price lists we reviewed, a small pet's whole-body burial came to a median of about $350[16]. A cheaper middle path is private cremation and then burying the ashes in a planter or a favorite corner of the yard.

Questions people ask
Does my vet charge more to cremate a guinea pig?
Often a little, because the vet stores your guinea pig, handles paperwork and arranges collection. That convenience is real, but it's optional. You can ask the vet which crematorium they use and what it charges directly, or take your guinea pig home and arrange aftercare yourself.
How much ash will I get back from a guinea pig?
Very little: our estimate for a median-weight guinea pig of about 1 kg is roughly 37 g, which is about two level tablespoons. A heavier boar may return a bit more. That amount fits easily in a keepsake urn, a small wooden box or a heart-shaped tin.
Is there a cheaper rate for pocket pets?
Some crematoria have a small-animal or pocket-pet tier for guinea pigs, hamsters, chinchillas and birds that's cheaper than their lightest cat and dog band. Many don't advertise it, so ask directly. If they don't have one, your guinea pig will simply be charged at their lowest weight band.
Does pet insurance cover guinea pig cremation?
Rarely. Most standard policies, including exotic-pet policies, exclude cremation and burial, though some cover euthanasia when it's medically necessary. A few US insurers sell end-of-life add-ons that reimburse aftercare up to a set limit. Check your own policy wording and keep an itemized receipt.
Can I take my guinea pig to the crematorium myself?
Yes, and many families do. It saves the collection fee and lets you hand them over personally. Wrap your guinea pig in a soft towel or their fleece, place them in a small box or carrier, and call ahead so the crematorium knows when you'll arrive.
Is it cheaper to bury a guinea pig at home?
Usually, yes. Burial in a garden you own often costs nothing but time. Choose a spot away from vegetable beds and water, dig deep enough that animals won't disturb it, and use a cotton wrap or cardboard box rather than plastic. If you rent, a large planter or cremation keeps your options open.
