Upland, California
What families in Upland usually arrange
Upland grew up around citrus groves, and Euclid Avenue, with its wide median lined with pepper trees and its historic pioneer monument, still reflects that heritage. The foothills and mountain views are part of daily life for many families with pets here. It's natural for those places to shape the memorial you choose. Private cremation with ashes returned lets you decide later where to remember your pet.
Upland summers are hot, with inland valley temperatures often in the 90s and heat waves above 100F, while winter can bring snow to the peaks behind town. Strong Santa Ana winds blow through the foothills in fall and winter, bringing fire risk. If your pet dies on a hot day, move the body indoors, wrap it in a towel and place ice packs alongside. Winter gives you more time.
A rural practice serving Upland may keep a pet in its freezer until the crematorium's next collection, which is perfectly normal and doesn't affect the cremation. If you'd rather your pet wasn't frozen, say so and ask whether you can drive them to the crematorium yourself. For a rabbit or guinea pig that's a simple trip, and it often shortens the wait for the ashes.
With roughly 79,446 residents, Upland is the 101st-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Upland are based about 13 miles away in Fontana, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Our pages for Claremont (3 miles), Ontario (4 miles, a larger centre) and Montclair (4 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Upland as well.
70.5%[1]
The NFDA projected California's cremation rate at 70.5% for 2024.
6 million[2]
About 6 million US households keep small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.
4.3 years[3]
Pet rabbits in England have a median age at death of 4.3 years.
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
The published sources behind those figures are American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 National Pet Owners Survey release and O'Neill et al. 2020, Veterinary Record.

How California thinks about cremation
Around 70.5%[1] of people who die in California are cremated. Where cremation is this normal, pet crematoria tend to compete, and some list a separate price for pocket pets rather than charging the same as for a cat. It's worth asking for that price by name. The difference is rarely large, but it tells you the provider handles rabbits and guinea pigs often enough to have thought about them properly.
For the California figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Upland rather than as pet data.
Cool, covered and safe: Upland weather notes
Seasons shape small-pet aftercare more than people expect. Hot spells bring heatstroke and flystrike in rabbits; wet, cold spells are hard on outdoor guinea pigs and elderly rabbits. In Upland, ask your vet what they see most at this time of year, and whether they'd suggest changes for the survivors: moving a hutch into shade or indoors, adding extra bedding, or checking droppings daily while a bonded partner grieves. A small body itself is easy to keep safe for a day in a lined box somewhere cool.

Pricing a private cremation for a pocket pet in Upland
The euthanasia is often a separate bill from the cremation, and families in Upland are sometimes surprised by it. There's no national figure for rabbits, but CareCredit's 2025 study puts cat euthanasia at $158 in a clinic and $359 at home[5], the closest published benchmark for a small pet. Exotics vets may charge a little more for sedation, so ask for both figures together.

Burial, ashes and paperwork in California
Pet cremation is lightly regulated almost everywhere. A UK trade body has described it as an unregulated market[7], and one directory counts only a handful of US states with laws aimed specifically at pet crematories[8]. Whatever applies in California, your best protection with a small pet is a written note from the provider saying whether the cremation is individual, partitioned or communal, and when the ashes will be returned.
To find your county or city office in California, start with the official California local government directory.
We keep California's burial and scattering rules in one place: the California rules summary. Before a home burial in Upland, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
A checklist for Upland small-pet owners
- Make sure your pet has really died. A cold room can send a hamster or pygmy hedgehog into a torpor that is easy to mistake for death.
- Warm them gently for 30 minutes, either in cupped hands or tucked against your chest, watching all the while for a slow breath or a tiny twitch.
- Call a vet if you're unsure. It's a common worry and they won't mind the question.
- Once you're certain, wrap your pet in soft cloth or tissue and lay them in something small, like a tea box or the box from a piece of jewelry.
- Keep the box somewhere cool while you decide between a garden burial, communal cremation or a private cremation in or near Upland.
- Ask the crematorium how they handle the very smallest pets, and be direct about whether a hamster or hedgehog this small will leave any ash to return.

Questions people ask
Why does the Upland page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 70.5%[1] of California residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will I have to travel to Fontana to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Fontana (roughly 13 miles from Upland) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Upland?
Usually yes. Claremont is about 3 miles away, Ontario is about 4 miles away and Montclair is about 4 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I actually get ashes back from my guinea pig?
Yes, from a genuine private cremation. Ash is mostly processed bone, and a median-weight guinea pig returns about 37 g[9] by our estimate, a couple of tablespoons. A rabbit returns more, around 74 g[6]. Ask the provider how they keep very small pets separate, because the real risk isn't losing everything but mixing with other remains.
My rabbit was only four. Is that young?
Sadly, not unusually. UK vet records put the median age at death at 4.3 years[3] for pet rabbits and 4.03 years[10] for guinea pigs, even though well-kept individuals can reach eight or more. Dental disease and flystrike claim many rabbits early. If your pet died younger than you hoped, it's rarely because you did something wrong.
Can two bonded rabbits be cremated together in Upland?
Yes, if you ask for a joint cremation. Their ashes are mixed and returned in one container, which many families find comforting. If one partner dies first, you can keep those ashes and ask later for them to be combined or buried together. Put the request in writing, because the default is to keep every pet separate.
