Saying goodbye to a rabbit or guinea pig in Ontario

Rabbit and guinea pig cremation around Ontario
Many Ontario families have roots in several places, and it's common for ashes to be split so relatives in other towns or countries can keep a share. A private cremation, where your pet is cremated alone, is the option to ask for if you want to divide the remains or keep all of them. Communal cremation costs less and suits families who'd rather not keep ashes at home.
Ontario sits in the middle of the Inland Empire, where older neighborhoods around downtown and Euclid Avenue give way to newer tract homes in the south of the city. Most pets here live in single-family houses with a yard, which makes a home farewell easy to arrange. If you'd like a pickup, mention whether you're near the airport or off the busy freeway corridors, since traffic on the 10, 15 and 60 can stretch a short trip.
Some Ontario families only realize their rabbit was unwell after the fact: a quiet evening, no droppings, a pet found stretched out in the hutch next morning. If the death was sudden and you keep other rabbits, call your vet before burying. Rabbit hemorrhagic disease can travel on bedding, shoes and hands, and your vet will know whether it has turned up in the area recently.
Ontario is home to about 187,013 people, the 24th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Fontana, roughly 12 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Ontario run from there.
Ontario sits within easy reach of Montclair (3 miles), Upland (4 miles) and Rancho Cucamonga (4 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Ontario; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

Why the California cremation rate matters here
About 70.5%[1] of people in California are cremated, so cremation is familiar, but it's still worth reading a price list closely. The terms individual, private and partitioned mean different things at different providers. For a rabbit or ferret, ask whether your pet will be alone in the chamber, or in a separate section alongside others. Both are sold as ashes-returned services, but only one is genuinely individual.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the California figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Ontario tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Timing a small pet's aftercare around Ontario's seasons
Chinchillas and degus handle humidity badly as well as heat, so in a close, muggy spell in Ontario watch them as carefully as you would in a hot one. If one dies, move the body to the coolest spot in the house within the hour. For the survivors, a dust bath, a cool tile to lie on and good airflow all help while the household finds its feet again.

Where the money goes: small pet aftercare in Ontario
If you'd rather bury than cremate but don't have a yard, a pet cemetery is the other route. One pet insurer's published US prices for a plot for pets under 30 lb start at about $400 to $600[5], several times the cost of a private cremation. For most Ontario small-pet owners, the realistic choice is between a garden grave, which costs almost nothing, a communal cremation and a private one.

Local rules worth knowing in California
Most decisions after a small pet dies are yours alone. Where California and your local council, city or county may have a say is burial: depth, distance from wells and streams, and whether renters can bury at all. Landlords and homeowners' associations can add their own conditions, so check your lease or HOA guidelines too.
California keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Ontario.
Start with the California rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Ontario's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
What to do when your rabbit or guinea pig dies in Ontario
- Ask your pet sitter to call you first, before they move anything, if your pet dies while you're away from Ontario.
- Talk them through the basics by phone: a towel around your pet, a closed box and the coolest room in the house.
- Ask your vet to hold your pet in their cold room until you're home. Most will do this for a few days without fuss.
- Make sure the survivor is being watched, particularly for appetite and droppings, and leave the sitter with the vet's phone number.
- Decide on aftercare when you're back and able to think. There's no need to choose from a hotel room.
- Say goodbye at the clinic if that would help, ahead of the burial or cremation taking place.
Small keepsakes for a small life
Summers in Ontario are long and hot, with August afternoons in the mid-80s and often well beyond, and the valley can hold heat into the evening. If your pet dies at home in warm months, move them to the coolest room, lay them on a towel and place ice packs wrapped in cloth along their back. In the mild winters you have more breathing room, but it still helps to decide on cremation within a day.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in California?
For people, yes: about 70.5%[1] of California deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Ontario follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Will I have to travel to Fontana to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Fontana (roughly 12 miles from Ontario) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Ontario?
Usually yes. Montclair is about 3 miles away, Upland is about 4 miles away and Rancho Cucamonga is about 4 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can I scatter my rabbit's ashes in an Ontario park?
Public parks usually have their own rules, and some ask you to get permission first. With only a few tablespoons of ash, many families find burying a small tin or scattering in a private garden easier and more meaningful. If you do scatter somewhere public, choose a quiet spot away from paths and water, on a still day.
Are there crematoria near Ontario that are used to small pets?
Few crematoria anywhere take only small pets, but many in and around Ontario handle rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets every week. Ask how often they cremate animals under 5 lb and what they use to keep them separate. A provider who answers confidently and in detail is usually one who does it well.
Can two bonded rabbits be cremated together in Ontario?
Yes, if you ask for a joint cremation. Their ashes are mixed and returned in one container, which many families find comforting. If one partner dies first, you can keep those ashes and ask later for them to be combined or buried together. Put the request in writing, because the default is to keep every pet separate.
